Mustang or Danny Grey airhawk seat?
« on: June 30, 2015, 08:25:03 PM »

I'm looking at changing the stock seat on the 2013 RG for a two-piece seat with a backrest for our 6000 mile trip we are planning next year, so comfort is my number one priority. I've had mustang seats with backrests on my last two bikes and were very happy with them. I was thinking of giving the Danny Grey airhawk a try but hate to waste $1000 on it, wishing I went with the Mustang. The DG looks better in my opinion and is made with real leather but got mixed reviews on the comfort level. I would like to keep my fender strips on my bike but I'll take them off if needed. I'm looking for some advise and opinions from people that have put some long trips on both seats. I'm 6ft. 190lbs. and I have a set of Yaffee mini apes on the bike if that matters.

Thanks in advance for any help deciding, Dean

My butt has experienced all but the Danny Gray seat. The best seat for long hauls, IMHO is the Harley Hammock seat. (stock on 2015 sergu)I would say it is +250 miles compared to all others relating to the onset of tired butt syndrome. My butt and passenger's butt liked it so much I bought one for my 2007 SE Ultra Classic and shelved a $1,000 Corbin.

Harley Hammock Rider and Passenger Touring Seat

Part Number 52000176 without heat
Part Number 52000177 with heat
Backrest is an option but I think you already have this on the 2013???

I have the mustang vintage 2 pc with the back rest.    Best seat I ever used.   Period.

I've had the Danny Grey Airhawk for ~25K miles now but have never had a Mustang so I can't compare the two.  It is much more comfortable for both me and my passenger than the Harley Hammock or a stock FLHTCU seat.  I like that it sits lower than both along with having the ability to change the air pressure on the fly to alleviate any discomfort.  If you have long legs it may sit you too low to have your feet comfortable on the foot boards.  On a 700 mile day I may change the pressure once or twice just to change things up a little, anything less than that I typically don't mess with it.  My passenger has never complained with this seat where the stock seat was intolerable for more than 50 miles and the Hammock seat tended to cause her to continually slide forward and thus readjust after every bump, tiring for both of us.

Good luck with your choice.

In regard to the fender strips, I have the Mustang Vintage two piece in my 2012 Street Glide, and removed the rubber "bumpers" on the bottom of the passenger seat.  It fits fine, and allowed me to keep the fender strips.  Good luck with the search.

I have to agree with you Stu. I've had them on all my bikes since the mid 90's. I never even considered any other seat, now  I'm just wondering if there's a better seat out there. I've heard mixed reviews on the hammock and I think I have it narrowed down to the DG Air Hawk or the Mustang. I have two questions  for Jeevz how tall are you and whats your inseam measurement? I have a 34inch inseam and sitting too low in the seat is a concern for me. Thanks Freestate, for the tip on removing the rubber bumpers. I never liked the little circles they put on my fender over time.

I have no experience with Mustangs. No opinion.

For my money the Harley Hammock on my 2015 is the best seat for me. I am a 'big boy" and need a big seat. I wish the hammock was a bit higher but it
is the best I tried.

I bought a Danny Gray Airhawk Big Seat. I found it to be too narrow up front for my thighs. It also pushed me back (which was okay) and lower me in the saddle. I have a 32" inseam and did not care for being lowered. Also, when riding on smooth surfaces it was fine but as soon as I hit a tar snake or a bump in the road the force traveled up my spine. Using the Hammock I don't get the spine bumping experience.

Jimmy "2k" might have some words of advice too when it comes to the Danny Gray Airhawk. He and I have pretty much the same opinion.

I had a Danny Gray Airhawk, but not for very long on my SERG because I traded bike shortly after buying it. I have said this before but I think most people put to much air in them. I loved it and so did my wife. But everyone that got on the bike to "try" it said you do not have enough air in this thing and they would turn it into a basketball then complain about how "hard" it was. I have a neighbor that has MS, he has sat in a wheelchair 24/7 on a Airhawk for the last 10 years and he took it upon himself to school me on using the air for comfort and what he said worked. Very little air is needed, it just fills in the voids between your legs/butt and the seat and provides a very small cushion between pressure points and the seat. In my opinion it was the best seat I ever used, but I didn't have it long enough to do a really long ride.

So since I said the disparaging words on the Airhawk, let me assure you I had proper air in it. As I said, under nice road conditions it worked fine. It's the ruts and bumps where it failed to perform for "me". Along with the low profile, it was not a good seat for "me".

6' with a 34" inseam, I don't feel cramped at all.  I have seen a few taller/longer inseam folks that complained of being cramped.
