getting a high pitched noise (most of the time)
« on: July 23, 2015, 12:22:56 PM »

I thought it might be the saddle bags, but I lubricated them and it did not go away. It happens in neutral as well as in gear. It is really hard to hear where it is coming from, it may be metal on metal. Sounds like it may be in the gas tank area, concerned it may be lifters.

Anyone have any suggestions.

Lifters have been known to make a few different noises from a "chirp" to a "clack" to a "rattle" even a "screech", if you hear that last one it's probably to late to prevent collateral damage to other engine internals. In my opinion, an my opinion only if you have over 10k miles on the engine I recommend changing the lifters and installing some adjustable pushrods. The adjustable pushrods save some labor because you won't need to remove the rocker boxes.

I say that because my lifters met an early demise at @ 7800 miles. My repairs were covered by warranty and I have an ESP so I had the dealer install the latest SE lifters. As luck would have it  ::) I had another issue this season which required the camchest to be opened up and the lifters looked like new at 20k miles.

Another thought, just to keep you from thinking the worst.... if your hearing a rattling noise try resting you foot on the shifter to see if those components are worn.

I also had to add a "wave" washer on the shifter shaft because mine was making noise driving me crazy.....

Primary chain will "chirp" when in need of adjustment.  8) Later--HUBBARD

A shot of silicon spray on each of the muffler hanger rubbers quieted my squeaking.

Also check the rear exhaust bracket at the starter.  They are known to break from vibration and will squeak.

Depending on the millage and oil used might want to check out the cam chain tensioners and the rest of the cam chest.
