WHAT'S THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM ON THIS DISCUSSION???We are all talking about the value of a used Harley, the price of a new one, and how much we have in our bikes. The reality is that Harley has sold bikes using a magician's "smoke and mirrors" tactic for years. In the most recent past, (the period that it seems most of the riders can still remember), the Soft Tail Springer came out and the dealerships were taking names and calling people if they got an extra one in stock that wasn't pre-sold. When the 100th anniversary bike came out, (2003) we were all told they would increase in value, "because HD was only going to produce a limited quantity of each model", and they were also priced higher than their counterparts. When the CVO market started, we all felt like we were getting a deal if we got them anywhere close to MSRP, and again told about the limited production and the way they would hold value in the future.
Now after years of abuse, loss of trade values, overpriced new stock, and poor customer service what do we do?

We piss and moan about how much of a bath we are going to take when it is time to buy a new bike. (This includes me,
I can't seem to unload my $42K SEEG for even a couple of thousand below book!)
What is even worse, is all the threads, after years of this type of treatment and lack of interest, and HD flooding the market, members still talk about getting another one. We seem to be willing to "bend over and take it again, and don't even get a kiss!)

I used to understand the attachment to HD, but that was pre 1969, nothing has seemed to lead toward building allegiance to the brand since the original company sold out.
I for one would strongly consider never buying a new HD, (and take advantage of the weak resale values that have been created), and would even look at the competition for the first time in over 40 years on a Harley. At the very least, if I go into a dealership, I would be going in knowing I could take the half price of a new bike and use it for toilet paper and be ahead of the game, at least I got some benefit out of the $10, 15, and even 20k that I will have to give up when I sell a Harley in today's market.
BUT, GUESS WHAT?

? I AM SURE MANY OF US WILL BE BACK AT THE LOCAL DEALER WHEN WE WANT A NEW RIDE!!!
