Changing to Mobil 1 synthetic from Syn 3???
« on: September 06, 2015, 09:05:33 PM »

Hey guys. Thinking of changing from Syn 3 to Mobil 1 on my '04 SEEG. It's got 68k great miles on it now and still running strong. Thinking of going to Mobil 1 VTwin 20-50 in the motor and the primary and BelRay Gear Saver Hypoid 85-140 in the transmission. BTW, the dealer put BelRay in the transmission of my new tri-glide back in 2013 too. Just put a Michelin rear tire on the SEEG and THEY say it can't be worn out so I want to get a bunch more miles on the bike. lol Pro's, con's???

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 is a very good full synthetic motor oil.  There wouldn't be any "cons" to running it, but since you've been happy running SYN3 for 68k miles, why are you considering changing now?  Tell us the rest of the story.

If you are going to change what you use, consider this stuff.  $40 for 5 liters.

Use HD primary oil for the primary.

On the advice of people that ran it before "V-Twin" oils existed, I've been running Mobil1 15w-50 automotive oil
for the last 15 years with good results. I buy it from my local farm store when they have their 18% off bag sales.

Our '15 RGU CVO had just over 1000mi on it when we bought it, had just had the 1000mi service on it so I assume it got SYN3.
2 weeks ago I did the 5000mi service, put in the 15w-50, along with Redline trans and primary oils.

I don't like making this kind of claims, but I swear the motor is running 10* or so cooler based on the head temps I see on my Power Vision.
It was hovering around 90* here yesterday, on the open highway at 60mph I never saw more than 208-210* head temp and 175* water temp.
Head temps before in similar conditions had always been 218-220.

X2 on the Liquid Moly............been using Mobile 1 15w50 for years with no bad results but after doing research on the LM.....gonna give it a go. No real reason, just the praises of LM swayed me.

I remember a comparison in one of the motorcycle magazines back in the 80's that compared 10w40 to 20w50 in air cooled motorcycles.  Their findings indicated that 1040 flowed faster through the motor and carried away heat better.  Also less pumping losses to power.

I ran 15w50 in my Valkyrie, but my 07 UltraClassic did not like it, lots of top end noise.

Certainly nothing wrong with running Mobil 1 in your bike.  It's what I run.  But after almost 12 years, why change now?   :nixweiss:

When I need an oil change and I'm at Walmart I'll buy the Mobil 1. (When they have it)
If I'm at the Harley dealership, I by Syn 3. 35k miles and going strong. I've never notice any difference between them. I use about 1/2 a quart in 5,000 miles.

Speaking of Walmart it seems only certain locations carry Vtwin mobil one and the one of three in my area that does is constantly out. I don't understand that isn't Walmart supposed to have one of the most elaborate computer order/stocking system around? They should all carry it and by the case not just a few quarts like I most often find now.
Been running it for years in my bikes I've owned along with Redline shockproof in the tranny.....

I work in a car dealership and I get a KILLA deal on all oils since we buy in bulk. My oil rep gets me Mobil1 V Twin for around the same price as dino oil. I just changed the oil at 1K miles in my Convertible and changed the trans fluid to Shockproof. Now I can find neutral with little to no effort and I know I won't put 5K miles on this bike in the next 12 months so I'm done with fluids for a while.

+1 LIQUI MOLY  10/60 RACE TECH.....   this oil is what we sell in my company, all the local Harley guys love it.
I have been using it in all my bikes since it came out, we so need it here in Australia as it gets a bit hot here  :)

Why would you change after this many years? Is there more to the story? I use Mobil 1, always have but I would't change now if I had that old of a bike. And I think the Syn 3 is good stuff, I just get Mobil 1 cheaper.

Was actually told recently from a "EX-Harley Davidson Mechanic" that Harley's "Syn3" isn't actually a synthetic oil.  He claimed that it was actually Mobil 1 "labeled" for Harley.

He claimed that if you read the bottle, nowhere will it state that it's a full synthetic oil but rather a play on words.  Don't know if what he told me was true but plan to research it more to be sure.

He suggested that if I wanted a true synthetic to go with either Red Line or Amsoil...
