FOLLIES....with fuel
« on: September 07, 2015, 11:37:33 AM »

But I'm thinking we need a "follies" thread where we can all post bone head chit like this that we've experienced.  We'll let Dayne66 start that thread.  :bananarock:

Well then....here's another.....My first 'owned' house (about 1985)...needed sod.....so...while hooking up the utility trailer the phone rings and I run and grab it........fast forward to bumpy south 50th street in Edmonton on the way to the sod farm....while going over a few good bumps I had to brake and swerve to avoid someone that decided to turn at the last minute......the trailer pops off the ball and as I'm braking punches a hole in the gas tank of my '81 Cutlas.....the coupler is then scraping on the ground making sparks while fuel is spilling from the hole in the gas tank....I got pulled over.....assessed......and jacked up the rear of the car to try to stop the rest of the 1/2 tank of gas from leaking out. The guy directly behind me backed off pretty damn quick...and stopped to lend a hand. Apparently when the phone rang I had the chains and wires hooked up and the coupler just sitting on the ball....doh!
The fire dept came out and watered the area down and AMA towed the car....a buddy came and got the trailer ....and my sod. Luckily I didn't leave a stream of fire behind me! These days I think there would be Hazmat there and environmental issues.

Had to move this and delete from other post..........this could become a classic thread. I got a couple of more "sniffing fumes follies" but don't want to post back-to-back and hog the thread.....or is that thread the hog!!!

Don't beat yourself up to bad.......it(stupid mistakes)happens to everyone at least once. On a trip to the Keys one year, I kept smelling gas. Stopped outside Miami to fuel, popped the lid.....no cap. We had covered over 600mi that day. Quick trip to AutoZone and a Dodge PU cap(looked like the closest thing). Had to remove the cap every 75 mi or 'run out'. Glad those punks didn't further ruin yo day.

yeah,  we have all done bone head mistakes ...

mine was hooking up a 14k lbs flatbed trailer to a 2inch ball on my F350 dually .....   it stayed on the hitch while running around getting a flat fixed on the trailer etc ...   but just try driving a B21 backhoe, loader tractor up the ramps ..   :P    amazing what a good lever can do ....

hitch came off the ball,   safety chains lifted the ass end of the truck off the ground about 8 inches ...  hahahaha   it took some real creative moves to get out of that one without major damage ....    in the end wound up with only small scratch and dent in the tailgate ..   but man I felt silly ...    ;D
