Licensed Plate Frame for the 2014 Road King CVO
« on: September 15, 2015, 11:44:01 AM »

I can seem to find a Black Frame for the Road King...I've bought 2 frames already, which the seller indicated that it will fit the CVO...Not!
Even the H-D Dealership cant help...I would like to find a black frame that will fit under the OEM Light, along with the plate itself.
Any ideas or suggestions?

The picture indicates the original set up. I can put the Licensed plate on and that's it.

Thanks

There's always the Bagger Nation / Paul Jaffee Stealth III (USLP3)...  it comes in gloss black and chrome.  This was a black one that Joe Z at Xtreme Dynamics in New Jersey painted to match the Crushed Sapphire OEM color.  https://ridingtwoup.wordpress.com/2014/01/11/and-were-done-the-jaffe-stealth-iii-is-installed/

I resisted getting the Yafee frame because I was worried in CA the tags would get covered up and I would get hassled but one day out riding I saw a bike with it on and no problem so I bought one and sent it to Joe also to paint to match my maple and it looks great. It is easy to find a black plate frame to fit under the stock light. You should look into curved plate like Yafee as it was just a plug and play deal. I had around 35000 miles before I did it and the marks left by the stock set up buffed out very easily.

How hard is it to take the cover off of the Stealth plate to access the plate(to add a reg sticker)?

If you can attach the sticker on without taking the frame apart that is the way to go--depending on where the sticker needs to be. You don't want to have to remove the plate each year to put the sticker on it. First you would need to remove the frame from the fender and then dis-assemble the frame to get the plate out. It's a PITA!

No need to remove plate to put on sticker.

I think that is the same one I have on my 2013 RK only mine is chrome. I like it but it tried to make life tough when I went to put my plate in it. I got her dun but with some extra cussing.

How hard is it to take the cover off of the Stealth plate to access the plate(to add a reg sticker)?

On most bikes, it's would only be a mild PIA.  It's fairly easy to access the attachment hardware to get it off the rear fender, but then there are a boat load of screws that need to be removed to get at the entire plate. On our FLHRSE5, it's a major PIA as I've got a Bushtec hitch that blocks access to the backside of the rear fender so it needs to come off to get to the frame.

So, what's a lazy bastard like me to do?  I just trim the decal's corner and put it on without removing the plate.  It's close enough and unless someone was taking their bike to a show, no one would ever notice (or care) that it wasn't installed per spec.

Love the Stealth frame. No issue for CA on the reg sticker.

Just to be clear. It is not really a PIA in the real sense. It toook me about five minutes to put the plate in iit and make sure it was lined up to not block tthe tag numbers. Texas can pull you over for that one. So it took me five minutes vs 2 minutes with the stock one. I have had a lot of people ask me about it. I like the nice flush clean look it gives the rear fender.

Fair enough...  There are 10 small screws that connect the backplate to the faceplate (and no, that's not the correct backplate: I had to swap it out for the right one: kudo's to Bagger Nation Customer Service!).  Note that the screws are brass and will be reflected in your fender unless you paint the heads a dark color; or, at least that was my experience.

The Stealth III still ranks as one of the best cosmetic clean-up mods I've made to the CVORK.  Color matched heat deflectors was #2 and the color matched backrest/rack adapter was #3. Thank you Joe Z. at Xtreme Dimensions for all of the piece-part paint work!

Thanks to all for the info. I am definitely going to go with a color matched Stealth.
