plug wire caution
« on: October 04, 2015, 12:43:17 PM »

Just thought I would put this out there.while doing a service on my 2015 road glide I noticed the front spark plug wire worn half way thru .upon closer inspection it appears it rubs the fuel tank seam.I have checked three other bikes and each one had the same issue.

This is a known issue on all the Rushmore bikes. If under warranty, dealer will install new wire. But in time, it will do the same thing. Harley refuses to do anything (other than replace it while under warranty) to correct the problem. Many of us have just installed a small self stick felt pad onto the area of the tank where the wire rubs. I also attached a small piece of clear tubing over the wire and zip tied the tubing in place.

Had the dealer change mine the other day. Service manager wasn't too sure about it at first until we looked at every Rushedmore model in the place and they're all doing it. I rode it home and stuck a piece of wire loom over the wire and shoved it up far enough to be hidden. I can change that wire loom in a matter of seconds once it rubs through.

Even on the simple stuff it too often feels like Mother Harley just can't get out of her own way.  Most strive for at least Lenin's approach of one step back and two steps forward.  MoCo, so far as QC and using riders as beta testers goes, seems to think a "C" grade and breaking even is victory (no pun intended) and that one step forward accompanied by steps back is just good enough all too often.

Thanks for the heads up guys.  I'm going to do the wrap around with the tubing trick or maybe the felt stickem thing.  Anybody got these Phat wires on their bike and how are they holding up?  About the same?

Harry, don't mess with extra expense for aftermarket wires.  They won't really gain you anything and varying much at all from stock with plugs and wires sometimes causes new issues with Harley's approach to detonation detection.

I got the red SE wires, mostly because I liked the look of them, but I just yanked the stock ones out without moving the tank. They came out with the clips from under the tank very easy then cut the wire tie off and reused the part of them that plugs into the frame combined with a new wire tie and retied them over the top of the horn cover bracket. Problem solved and the red looks cool with the red bike.
