Marvel Mystery Oil
« on: October 27, 2015, 09:30:21 PM »

On a plane to Calif this summer I sat next to a guy who rides and restores all types of old bikes. We started talking about engines and trannys and he told me amout MMO. Being in my late 40's, I was unfamiliar with this stuff invented in the 1920's. The more research on the net that I do, the more it seems like everyone swears by it? Does anyone on here use it? Also:
Is it ok to mix it with syn oil?
I was told just put about an ounce into the oil tank.
Does anyone use it as a gas additive?

Thx.

What exactly do you think it's going to do for you?  I suggest you do a little more research, and this time avoid the anonymous BS testimonials.  There is nothing there that your engine needs, and that 1920's era snake oil additive has absolutely no real factual test data to support any of the multitudes of claims made for it over the years.  The only Mystery is why so many people fell for it.  I suggest you stick with modern science embodied in the fuel and lubricants currently available.  No additives required or recommended.

I don't know about as an oil additive, but I have used it as a gas additive.  pretty much like sta-bil or such.  I thought it worked fine.

I used to use it on my '69 shovelhead, in the oil tank and a cap full in the gas tank every couple of tanks full. Great stuff, it quieted down some of those weird noises.

I have a quart on the shelf out in the garage. I use it as a penetrating oil and put in the cylinders of old engines. We used to use it when storing old outboard motors, put a couple ounces in the cylinders and pulled the starter with the spark plugs out. Never ran it as a primary oil in anything.

I grew up in the late  60 era and being around my Uncle who not only rode bikes but love to work on cars at that time always used mmo only when selling a car.  I can still hear him saying it like it was just yesterday.   Pure some of that sh-t  into  the crank case to shut them lifters up !!  If you wanted to mask the noise from a warn out motor that was his trick.  At this day and age No way would I ever think of anything but some type of synthetic oil on any modern day motor. The only use I have for the "Ole" black and red can for me is great memories of working in the garage with him and listening to all the guys come in with there stories.

When I built machines using SENCO nailers and staplers they had a strict rule. No Marvel Mystery Oil, their engineering claimed it may the O rings swell and fail prematurely.  I have used it in gas tanks before and as a rust remover on frozen fasteners.

That's what I use it for. Never crossed my mind to use it as an additive...

You are making too much sense again.  These magical oil additives - snake oils - have made a lot of folks very rich.  The mystery as well as the marvel is explained by P.T. Barnum & the birth rate he referred to.

I keep Marvel in the shop all the time.  Mixed with a little kero it's much easier on the hands as a hand cleaner when such is necessary and it makes for a good cutting oil.  Occasionally mix it in a little fuel too.  But it gets a lot more use around machine tools or to lube air tools.  It also tastes better than antifreeze, brake fluid, carb cleaner and most other shop fluids that one occasionally accidentally gets a spritz of.

I forgot, the other thing I do with Marvel oil is dribble a few drops on the shock boots/seals of my Bushtec trailer each spring.  Keeps them from drying out quite nicely. 8)

Same here.  Shelf full of magical lubricational elixirs.  Used Seafoam until I switched to Stabil for small engine gas cans & the boat gas tank. Seems to work ok but switching to no ethanol gas works even better for these.  Not sure when used MMO last.  Probably on a garage door spring. Penetrating type oil. Have decided WD 40 works better for that kind of stuff since it's in a spray can.  Also is a good bug killer.  Do not use any of that stuff in a crankcase or tranny though.

The magical oils are on a different shelf than my miracle waxes & amazing polishes.  If I added up what all this wonderful crap actually cost would have a heart attack or a brain hemorrhage.
