Question about wire spoke wheels...
« on: November 02, 2015, 12:30:10 PM »

I've had issues with my old '76 FL Shovelhead when I changed out the aluminum stock wheels with 3.5"x16" wire spoke wheels.

I bought inexpensive wheels, but made in the US.  When I broke a few rear spokes the shop I bought from had "their guy" re-spoke them for me at no charge and said they'd last forever.

Well here I am getting ready to put it back up for sale and I have two spokes broken right at the inside hub.  They are the ones that come from the inside out and have the tight 90 degree hook end.

As a kid I used to re-spoke a wheel or two, but I had all the spokes out at the same time and could move the hub around a bit to get them all in place.

My question is this, can I just take two new spokes and thread them from the inside out and then with the tire removed thread the nipples back on and tweak them in tune with the other spokes?

Has anyone just replace a spoke or two before?

I replaced a spoke occasionally on the '70 FLH without problems.  Had a home-made truing/balance stand just to check the 'wobble' each time.  Always used factory spokes.

Thanks for the reply.  I have just two broken spokes so I'll try that this weekend.
