What are my options on tuners?
« on: November 10, 2015, 09:25:04 AM »

There's a good chance that I'm buying a used bike this week and the original owner cut out the cat and "tuned" the bike with a Power vision set up. When the dealer took it in trade, they didn't get the PV unit. I've been approached by the original owner and he's offered to sell me the unit "at a good deal" but I don't know how much at this point. From what he's said, the programing component mounts on the handlebars (I guess so you can make adjustments on the fly?). I looked at the PV website but I didn't dig very deeply into it.

My questions are:

Is this a tune it yourself product or a "real" tuner that can be used on a dyno it to do a proper set up on the bike?

Am I stuck with this unit since it's married to my ECM and should I bite the bullet and buy it?
or
If I buy a different tuner can it overwrite the PV settings?

My only experience with tuners is the SEPST on my Ultra and GMR did that tuning for me, so basically I have none.

Thanks for your help,

Joe

Yes it's real tuner and it can be used on dyno

You are not stuck, as PV doesn't locked the ECM and you can overwrite with any other products

As said the pv is a real tuner, but you don't have to mount it on your handlebars. Only if you want to use it as a display unit.  You can choose several options on gauges that you want to display, but you don't have to display any if you don't want. I keep mine in my saddlebags when doing autotune runs, but after I'm done with t that I zip it up In a case for storage.

What is he considering a good price?.

I don't know at this point. The guy has some take off stuff that I'm going to look at and he's going to offer me a package deal. I hope to get with him later this week.

All I can say is it's a beauty!

Joe stopped by our place during his "test" ride to show it off.

Just a heads up,

Make sure it's locked to your Vin.
If it's not and you need the PV unlocked it'll cost you $200.00.
The cheapest I've seen the P V for is about $420.00 new so keep that in mind when making the deal.

Joe,

There are some new functions that have been released with the PV.  Target Tune being one of them.   I use the PV on several of my bikes even though I have a TTS.   My buddy prefers it to other tuners, so I go with what he uses.   It has worked equal to the other tuners, such as TTS, SuperTuner, DirectLink.    If the license is in the PV you are considering there is nothing that should scare you about going to the PV.   The thought that it doesnt lock your ecm is attractive.   You can also use the PV with multiple bikes just need a license for the ohter bikes.

Congrats on the new bike.
