. IF the cylinder is round and straight within spec then yes a light flex hone ( that is what most use to de glaze) is fine. However if you are changing pistons no is the time to have some correctly measure the bore, in tq plates and the piston you plan on using to see if it all falls into spec . It may turn into the engine that is always using oil or you get lucky and it runs great.  I have seen the dealer builds that where de-glazed work and others that did not. If its apart do it right , what ever that takes.  :2vrolijk_21:

Do it right.
Use a Sunnen or Lisle hone with 400 grit stones in torque plates.
Several strokes will give a better than factory finish.............as long as it is round.
A flex hone or "berry brush" is best left for guys that work on lawnmowers, rototillers, and such.

If you want to do it the quick and dirty way, which is how most Harley dealers do things like the various "upgrade" kits they sell, you just take the parts out of the boxes, dust them off, throw them together and button everything up, then give the bike back to the customer.  That's exactly how most places installed the 95 Big Bore kits, assuming Harley sent them perfectly machined parts so no extra time was needed to actually measure stuff.  Some got away with it, many did not.  Then it became a "1000 miles per quart is normal" BS scenario.

Do it right, have the cylinders measured using torque plates, measure each piston, and then depending on the results of the measurements you might only need to lightly hone the jugs, or you may need to bore them to eliminate taper or oval conditions.  That of course would mean using the correct oversize pistons, not the standard ones they just pulled out of the box and planned to stick in the holes.

Had a bike come in for a tune. Kit was from a dot com company.  Piston to valve, and valve to valve contact was happening in the rear cylinder with woods 555.   Dot com said to send it all to them.  He had .002 Pistons that he would gone cylinders for.  I got shipped back standard pistons and a ball honed cylinder.  Customer paid $400 for the new pistons.  Pretty shady work.

You can see how a ball hone follows what is already there.   Didn't even remove the carbon evenly.   I don't expect them to remove other material evenly either.

Those damn ball hone berry-brushes leave scratches and can load contaminate the cast iron.
If the OEM cylinder is still in the factory running specs after honing, and is round/straight no reason not to use the OEM std piston, but if the cylinder is out of spec, NATURALLY, the only alternative is to bore, and as long as your boring, may as well grab a set of pistons from Suburban HD, and have a 113".
5 sets of repair/modify heads in here since before Labor Day from..........................feel free to fill in the blank spaces.
Knew that it would happen/happening......matter of time.

Best bang for the buck....so far

Can have 112" for less than $100 more than what competitive pistons cost alone

Put the extra money toward a throttle body or headwork  :2vrolijk_21:

That is a good option.  What is the cc of the dome?

That is a very nice piston 4.2 cc dome and it is made of 4032.   :2vrolijk_21:

  Steve covered the specs

Ive been using the .030 since I could get them

Thinking about doing a run with a 6CC dome in 4.040 (.040 over)

since 99.9% of dealers have no machining capabilities (or knowledge either) ,ide take their advice with a grain of salt.any time changing piston,if the size of the new pistons arnt giving you at least .0005 to fixed hone (sunnen) to get fit & round,go .005 over (or do what john`s doing),but just ball honing & sticking new pistons in a old hole is a recipe for smoking & oil consumption

You put them in plates and clean the bore and end up with too much clearance every time. I don't even try, unhappy customers and waste of my time. I like those KBS and have used them in various size motors.

hrdtail78,

Guess it was luck of the Irish you found it.    Any idea if this was done in house by the vendor?
