When You Change Your Motor Oil How Much Do You Put In?
« on: November 29, 2015, 11:35:44 AM »

I have a 2009 CVO RoadGlide, and I am wondering how much oil everyone is putting in their 110 motors after they drain the pan through the plug. The bike is in the upright position during the process.

Three quarts, run the engine approximately one minute at idle to fill the filter completely, then check with the dipstick and add only what's required to bring the level up to one pint below the cold fill line.  Running it about a pint low helps prevent excessive oil carryover into the air cleaner, for whatever reason.

I'm not a big fan of just dumping in X amount of oil and calling it a day, since you are never sure with a Harley "dry" sump engine exactly how much oil remained in the engine after you drained the oil tank.

Same.  Run motor for a few minutes & top off as needed.  I tend to let it drain Warm motor) for maybe 20-30 minutes or so, never takes 4 qts.

3 quarts, run it and then no more than half way up the stick.  3.5 max., more than that will pretty much assure you start blowing oil into the air filter.

Thank you, I recently had elbow surgery not able to do the wrenching for this change of Tranny, Primary and Motor: brought bike to Arizona Harley dealer to change fluids I supplied the oil 7 quarts. Dealer returned 1 full quart and one partial quart with 20 ounces of oil in it. I checked my tranny it is full, my motor oil is up there and there is no way you can mess up doing the primary, therefore, it would appear 3 quarts 6 ounces of oil was put into my motor.

No way (dealer) can mess up primary...

Except for the ones that still only use one quart in the late model primaries like they did in the old 5 speed bikes.

Doing my fluid change on lift without any extra effort, 3qts gets mine to its happy level in engine, 1qt transmission, and 1qt in primary. It might call for 38 oz for primary oil change but I just eyeball that.

Same for me. Reason why it takes me so long is   add a little, check, add a little check, until just right. I'm more careful about oi levels more than anything. Comes from blowin up my first car motor from lack of oil. It cost me $150 for another motor but I learnt my lesson.

I do, it's a keeper, got 40k on her. I freshened the cam chest up around 36k.

Haven't rode nearly as much last couple of years compared to years prior. I could prolly stand a freshen up too.  :drink:

Hows yer TR doing? How you doing?
