S&S standard lifters are perfect for 90% of builds (and by far the best choice for a stock replacement),its also a good idea to shut the bike off immediately when a noise is heard

I started to comment several days ago and after rereading what I typed I just deleted it.  I have a tendency to be a bit less than tactful on occasion, and in an effort to improve I try to proofread posts a couple times before actually posting them.  But now that the ice has been broken, and after reading your post from yesterday, I'll come out and say it.  Why did you, and why do so many others with this same kind of issue, keep riding after hearing the abnormal noise?  Would you keep driving your car or truck if it made similar noises?  Probably not would be my guess.  But for whatever reason, I read stories like this one all the time from Harley riders and find it mind boggling.

I assume the bike isn't covered by a factory warranty or service contract, and you're footing the bill yourself, so at this point you shouldn't be worried about what the dealership wants to do and use.  Insist they do what you want and use the parts you specify, or find someone else to do the work.  They can dictate those things when the repair is being paid for by warranty, they don't have that right if you're paying the bill.

Point taken about not shutting off the engine when I heard the noise,I guess I had a brain fart. thinking hoping it's something else,
I thank everyone for their input

My 110 makes so much damn noise I wouldn't know if I had a failure like this anyway!

That doesn't sound good. If it makes you feel any better my Jim's 131 has a rather noisy valvetrain but it has sounded the same all along so I haven't worried. I had the flywheels addressed when it was built so at least I don't worry about that like my 110.

Rooster, did you change out the Jim's Lifters ??  (Hoping the answers is yes  :)  The Jim's lifters are noisey and bleed down way to quickly.

As I'm reading this, I can't help but to ask what things I can do to my bike NOW to prevent such failures later on. I've seen many people post about upgrading lifters? My bike is a 2013 with about 15k miles.
Scott, IIRC, in 2013 models, HD changed to a different lifter.  So far, they seem to be much more reliable than the older ones.  No guarantees, of course.  Maybe others will weigh in to verify or debunk this.

I want to recall that I saw this somewhere, too. They are already ordered and at the shop, so I will probably follow through with it. Would seem kinda shady to call the guy up and cancel that work. If anything, I will just have a good set of new lifters and some peace of mind.

LMFAO!!! What is this Site coming to?? Jerry & Kirby being politically correct?? LMFAO...

As always, good advice here, but the OP might not have the same level of access ( down under) to parts / Dealers / Indys that we enjoy here...

Smee,
If your Dealer will give warranty on their repairs and stand behind the rest of the motor after fixing it "their way" then that is the route I recommend... Sometimes circumstances dictate we get "tied to" a particular shop for one reason or another... I can understand the Dealer not wanting to use Aftermarket / used parts, they're taking on liability... You can always change out the lifters after any warranty has expired if you want more peace of mind. Depending on the cost of the repairs, a Crate Motor becomes a viable alternative?

Still LMFAO...

Harry, Yes I ran the Jim's lifters this time around for break-in then changed to HD B's so I can say that the Jim's are noisy for sure. When my motor blew the first time around I had the install dealer put the HD B's in and when I sent it to Jims they called and asked why the lifters were changed and I said before I bought it I called a well known HD Dealer that tweaks and installs lots of Jim's motors and their main guy said if you do nothing else at least change out the lifters. She asked why and I told her he said to Noisy and they don't trust them. She went quiet for a second and said OK.

Thanks for your comments,
the dealer wanted to completely rebuild the motor, the cost was too much, we decided on new cams screamin eagle camplate with high output oil pump, screamin eagle lifters, new cam bearings, engine flushes.  They won't cover the cost should the motor fail through bits of metal going through the motor, but I'm sure he wouldn't let the bike out if he thought it was going to fail in the short term.
I have ridden it 100kms dropped the oil, looked through the oil with a torch and it is clean. So far so good,
