Seth @ Auto Original Backrest question
« on: January 17, 2016, 09:46:13 AM »

I'm getting ready to send my stock seat to Seth and was looking for some feedback on the comfort of adding gel to the seat from some of the members that had this mod done. Surprisingly, I find this stock seat to be very comfortable on long rides but would love a little back support. I've read the old posts on here and I love the looks of his work, but cant seem to find any posts about before and after comfort when adding the gel to the seat. I do know it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter but I'm wondering about the comfort level on a long trip.

Thanks for any feedback and opinions,

Dean

Works for me. I think he puts memory foam in the backrest. It seems to conform after a while in the saddle. I don't use my C&C anymore. It looks better but the modified stocker is better on my butt.

I don't like the gel pads. Seth has made me several seats. Tried the gel only to have him remove it. But thats just me. I had Seth make my wife a new seat for her 2015 cvo street glide. He installed a air hawk pad. She seems to like that much better.

I didn't know Seth did the air hawk option. I think I would prefer that over the gel. What kind of cushioning do you have Seth put in your seats for comfort?  It looks like you live near Seth so changing things around was probably easier for you then me shipping my seat back and forth to New Mexico.

Thanks to both for your replies,

I have no direct experience with gel, but I've heard from enough people that it isn't all that great for seats.  other than the hot in the summer, cold in the winter thing, gel does not compress, so when you sit on it, it just oozes to another area.  eventually, because it is contained in a 'bag', it reaches the end of where it can move to and ends up creating pressure points, or 'hot spots'.

I know it is a love/hate thing with corbin, but you really want something similar .  a seat that is firm enough to provide you support, but also 'molds' to your contours.  the stock seats are made to feel great in the showroom when your sitting on the bike trying to talk yourself out of buying it :D

Seth added the back rest to my seat with no change to the padding. I was fine with that. On my wife's bike I had him build the complete seat with the air hawk option. He made the seat pan and the rear pillion along with back rest. They look and feel like the stock seat. My wife is very happy with the seat. The seat was made to move her forward by one inch. Air hawk added. It works very well.

I think I'm going to steer clear of the gel. I sat on a few of my buddy's corbins and always thought they were too hard, however they weren't contoured to my butt and I never sat on it long enough to give it a fair opinion. This is the first stock seat in the last 25 years I thought was comfortable on a long trip and looks great to boot. The first time I sat on my bike I was actually coming up with reasons as to why I thought I really needed a new one ::)

Thanks 2Timen for giving me an idea of what's involved in the air hawk install. Like I said before, I'm happy with the padding that's in the seat now, so I'll just keep it in there like you did. I guess it's time to give Seth a call :2vrolijk_21:

don't get me wrong, I wasn't specifically pushing the corbin.  you just want a seat that has a little more 'firmness' to it.  there are several companies that make great seats, ie. c&c, mustang, etc....  you  just have to find the one that works for you.  the important thing is to give it a chance.  a lot of people will sit on a seat for 2 minutes and just say, 'its too hard'.  you'll find that after 6 or 8 hrs in the saddle, that 'hard' seat is still allowing you to ride further, while the soft, cushy seat will have fatigued your butt to the point that you'd rather not even look at another motorcycle for a week.....

butt, (see what I did there? :D) seats are so very subjective.  what works for one, definitely does not work for another.  you've just got to find the one that does work for you.

good luck   :2vrolijk_21:

Hey Skratch...I totally understand what you were getting at with the firm seat. I always ran Mustang two piece seats with a back rest on my bikes since 1997 and always liked the comfort of them (after 300 miles not as much). The Mustangs tend to be more on the cushy side rather then the firm side. My stock seat I have now is more on the firm side but I really find it comfortable even on a long trip. The only thing I miss is my backrest not only for lower back support but also backing my bike around on grass or loose stones. I figured I could save a few bucks by having Seth add a backrest to my stock seat which looks way better then the fake leather look of the Mustang seat. I also considered the Danny Grey airhawk with a backrest, but again, I'll have close to $1000 rapped up in a seat that I'm not sure I'll even find comfortable. I think for now I'll have Seth install  a backrest on my stock seat and maybe try an air hawk pad for our cross country trip we have planned for this year. Can't wait!!! ;D    For now, I gotta deal with 12-18 inches of snow were about to get tonight into tomorrow >:(

Thanks Again for your insights,

Dean

because of my short legs, i'm limited to the seats that I can use on this bike.  like you, I found the stock seat to be comfortable enough.  for those long trips instead of just a backrest, I kill 2 birds with one stone.  I've got the chopped tourpack mounted in the solo position, with the backrest pad on it.  works great for me.  and even though the king tourpak holds more, I figure between 4 saddlebags and 2 chopped tourpaks, if it don't fit, it don't go  :D

Sweet set up there Skratch, I always wondered if running the tour pak in that position was actually comfortable. I need a spot to put my wife and all of her things she thinks she needs on a long trip. I ended up getting a newer style chopped tour pak and had Joe from extreme color match it for me. It looks and works great, just wish I went with the biggest TP to hold all her stuff ::)
