Tow All, 5th wheel towing solution
« on: January 20, 2016, 12:26:52 PM »

I just watched this and thought I would share it for those who may be thinking of buying a toy hauler but don't want to buy a new vehicle to tow it  :2vrolijk_21:

Now I'm wondering what the product's original name was.  "Tow All" is audio dubbed in everyplace the name is mentioned in his video  :huepfenlol2: .

Too lazy right now to do some of the physics or geometry necessary to figure some of this out.  Eventually, however, that rig has to transfer all the weight that you might give to a 5th wheel down to a Class II or Class III hitch.

I agree that "cheapens" this product a bit, you would think they would just re-do the entire audio  :nixweiss:

I am not endorsing this, I just found it interesting  :coolblue: and I think the unit itself is heavy duty enough to hold the weight of the trailer but the hitch and vehicle would have to be strong enough to handle the "tow weight"of the entire setup.

I wouldn't want to pull that trailer with that Durango if the trailer was full of cows.

My 1st thought was THATS IT, perfect for the Excursion. Gotta talk to a real life customer first.

Yes I know it shows it happening in the video but try backing that setup. We have some trailers at work that use the same dolly principal and you better know your stuff to back one

Thought of that while watching it too.  What effectively becomes two separate points of articulation while backing would REALLY challenge my trailer backing skills.

From what I can tell from the video, the unit is secured tightly to the vehicle with the chain tensioner's  virtually making it a rigid extension of the vehicle's frame, and the wheels on the unit are articulating, similar to a drop axle on a simi trailer or tri axle truck, therefore becoming the single pivot point for reversing.  To me it seems in the video that the articulating wheels have no trouble making the tight turn going forward but when reversing it looks a bit more rehearsed and awkward. It doesn't look like something I would be comfortable with either but I thought it was an interesting invention and could strike someone's interest.

He needs to consult an attorney before making stupid comments like now you can tow a fifth wheel trailer with any vehicle.  Better go back and edit that like he did other parts of his video.  First and foremost, that dolly setup doesn't change the fact that the vehicle doing the towing has to be certified to handle towing a load of that size and weight.  I can see it now, some nimrod trying to hook that thing up to a small SUV/CUV to haul his 20,000 pound trailer down the highway.  People who want to tow huge fifth wheel trailers need to invest in a properly equipped truck to do the towing.  If they don't want to invest the $50k to $100k necessary to do it right, then I suggest they hire someone with the proper equipment to haul their chit around for them.

Yeah, butt.....   One place where such a rig would make some sense.  As a yard tool.  To allow movement of the large trailers around a sales or production yard.  In that environment it's an idea.  But since that's obviously already managed somehow.....

That's about as far as I would go with this rig...   :(

Thought of that while watching it too.  What effectively becomes two separate points of articulation while backing would REALLY challenge my trailer backing skills.

Stays inline with the tow vehicle, but the wheels turn. Works like the "caster wheel" platforms for trailers to haul your bike or golf cart.

Another invention for a non existent problem.

BTW Don, if you need some guidance, there are YouTube videos of some twin towing Air Stream camper types who do the two trialer backing thing. Neat to watch, but I'm not going to try it.  :'(
