Fair enough. I apparantly have misunderstood Axtells kit.

Funny not everyone made the connection to Dewey and HD Street Performance. One other CVO owner sent me a PM and he has 50K on his. Nice to hear
I just got off the phone with CP we will be addressing the void with a 4cc domes piston. Not carved in stone yet but I think there is a void there. The 259e is real happy at 10.8 but still on alive at 10.5. 9.8:1 is pretty dull off idle to 2700

It appears as though there are quite a few options for gasket thickness.

I'm going to measure the one in the kit tomorrow unless someone knows it off hand.

Seems like that $40 addition could make a pretty solid difference.

Not much new to report waiting on the new heads to show up.. The heads had been ported and once I had them off and looked them over the decision was made to start with virgin casting.

Certainly not bashing. I'm posting only to point out that the 117" kit that Axtell had offered differs greatly from this HD kit in that their kit requires case boring to fit their (thick walled) iron-sleeved cylinders, Whether your engine was a 96/103/110.  If you had previously installed Axtell's 113" kit, your cases would've been bored, already. This meant that if you already had their 113 kit, then their 117 kit would be a drop-in. So, Axtell had a "117 drop-in kit". They had issues with their product and are working on it.

Now, skip ahead to last month and HD announces this SE kit with steel-liner and super thin-walled spigots designed to fit the 110 cases without boring (hence, 'drop-in').  So, coincidentally, the MoCo comes out with a completely different product that happens to fit the same description as a "117 drop-in kit".  But HD didn't "follow suit" They happened to create an alternative method and arrived at the same goal. Now, we Beta testers (!) get to learn if they did it well!

:2vrolijk_21: You are absolutely correct!  Apples and oranges.  I received an email yesterday from Axtell to this same effect.  I hope "HunterJ" reads this. :)

Could you please share what "virgin casting" you went with?  HD110, HD103, S&S, Ultima, etc.

Both of these heads were ported by me. I purchased Deweys head business in 2008. Since then I have ported over 800 sets of heads and done a lot of repair work. Dewey had a stroke and could no longer port heads.
Don, I knew Dewey was no longer doing the porting when you did Joe's heads and My heads.

I have 17K on my build since you did the porting.  The bike even though it makes more power, is much smoother to ride.  I too, am interested in what comes about for a little more compression with the HD 117 Kit.

Joe and Dave, didn't know the details of your builds. Don(HD Street Perf.) did the heads on my 113", different casting, they ended up 87cc and I used a flat top piston. CCC was only 186psi but still made 126hp/124tq. 130hp on SMHD's dyno. I think 190psi would be ideal on these 117's.

Don, those heads have over 30,000 hard miles on them now, still going strong.  :2vrolijk_21:

Stock gasket measured around .065" fwiw.

Stock gasket measured around .065" fwiw.

So, going with Cometic's 0.030" or even 0.040" HG would bump the compression of the kit.  Now, you have me wanting to do the math.  BTW, what does "fwiw" mean?

Thanks,

For what it's worth mannnnnn

It's a long story but I went down there to measure one thinking mine hadn't been started yet. Took them forever to produce a gasket to finally measure.

Even had a conversation with the service manager about maybe swapping in a thinner one.

Then walked back to see it done.

I'm like - dude you should have told me I'd have stopped wasting your time.

I'll probably swap next year when I do head work.

But it's fine because science n stuff.

I'm assuming no crush but measuring the thickness at the sealing ring my calipers indicated .060-.066 ish.

?shrug?

Those gaskets shown are for Twin Cooled motors but there are others available for the air cooled model too.
The change in head gasket alone will not put the compression in the optimum place for the 259E. It will run there and by virtue of the motor size run OK and not be octane sensitive. Its a value judgement if that last 5ft / lbs of torque felt very close to off idle is worth the cost.
