With the 577 I would use the same pistons in the kit. The idea to add a dome is to not have to machine the head. We can get to the same point compression wise however. Lets say a guy starts with the flat top , then later wants to go to a higher lift cam , it may create an issue with piston to valve clearance as the head was machined down.. In my opinion I like to keep things open for any future build..  In most case if we deck the head more than .050 we will also machine the intake face to allow the manifold to fit with ease . As that area will be reduced and what intake you run can also be effected there. Some what of a chain reaction,.. 

Yes you can machine the intake but you can only push the flange back so far.. 




As for the rods that a simple machine process , Mahle does not build a different piston its just machined to clear the full rod vs tapered.

Cylinders check out great no issues there. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: However if you decide to install an after market crank or re build yours for what ever reason the pistons are made for the tapered rod only. You can machine the inside of the piston if you have a full top style rod.. The silly part is that Mahle makes the after market version of the 110 already machined ..  :confused5:   Just a FYI

After laying hands on the new steel lined cylinders, what is your gut feeling about steel lined cylinders versus cast iron lined cylinders in regards to longevity, reliability, or plain old oil burning?

Not sure to make of that last comment..  its a steel liner  ,....not like I was going to be shocked to see it. . how can anyone look at a part that has no run time on it and come up with a answer to as it will last or it will be a oil burner..  Are you being serious as I cannot tell and really cannot follow that line of thought, makes no sense to me  :nixweiss:

Sorry, you can disregard my question.  I thought maybe you had a first impression with a steel lined cylinder versus cast iron lined cylinder, which you've probably handled hundreds of those I am guessing.  I highly respect your opinion and didn't mean to offend. :)

The other two builds going on right now with these kits are going on at dealers, not that there is anything wrong with that, but with the owners not allowed to be with their bikes we are not really getting any details on this forum about how the kit installs are going.  Strictly speaking about the cylinders and pistons (the new stuff), are tweaks being made to the kit to make things work/fit or are parts (like gaskets or rings) being substituted, etc.?  Maybe everything is perfect, but it’s in my nature to look for chinks in the armor.

I'm not sure but I think the hd kit is made by axtell. The Axtell 117 drop on kit comes with flat top pistons. Just the cylinders, pistons, rings, pins, and gaskets. It's 202-315 on the Axtell site. $1295.00.
Maybe Steve can confirm.

Believe that kit is a drop for the motors that have had the cases bored for the factory 113 jugs which is a little different than a drop in for the 110

Takes a 113", which has had the cases opened up for 4.060" cylinders, to a 117" Won't fit a 4" bore 110".

Guess that won't work for me. Steve, since you have seen and installed a kit, what I have now is an 07 96" with a 110 kit in it. Case bored, crank welded, trued, balanced. Would this 117 cylinder and piston kit fit my case since it was bored for the 110 kit?

Axtell has since discontinued there kit for whatever reason as I spoke with them on Monday.
