Blemish on brand new 2016 CVO Street Glide tank - advice please
« on: January 23, 2016, 11:33:05 PM »

My younger brother just purchased a 2016 CVO Street Glide. He was out of town when the bike arrived at his house for delivery and I was responsible for receiving it. Later that night under better lighting in the garage I noticed a small blemish, a defect in the clear coat, on the bike's tank right below the gas cap. Perhaps a ding from a gas nozzle? My brother returns home on Tuesday and I'm not sure what, if anything, I can do about it? I left a phone message with the dealer but they are closed now do to the snow storm here on the east coast. Does anybody have some advice? I inspected the bike when it was unloaded from the trailer but who would think you needed to use a magnifying glass? Unfortunately, when it got dark in the garage, and the lights came on, this little smudge stands out like a sore thumb.  :(

I would talk to the dealer as soon as you can and explain the situation. You could have missed that even if you picked it up.   You haven't even taken it out yet (mileage will reflect that). I would also document the issue. Take a picture of the blemish and mileage (if possible both the problem and mileage in one shot).  I hope your dealer takes care of you. It may something simple like a good buffing will take it out.  Good Luck!

+1 on that.

In addition to that I think it may be covered under warranty by HD IF it's a defect in the paint for up to one year after purchase. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the painted parts carry a different warranty term than the whole bike. The details of the actual warranty terms should be in the owners manual or the package of paperwork that came with the bike. If this was caused by mishandling during shipment by the transporter or  during prep by the dealer it should still be covered but it will probably be a bit more of a hassle to get satisfaction.

FWIW I can tell you that on my 11.5 CUSE6 I had a painted part replaced well after delivery due to flaws under the clear coat that only became apparent after the paint had fully cured which took several months.

I cant believe that was done by a gas nozzle.  When you feel it, is it deep?  If you got it from Chester springs, talk to Anthony he is really good and if he can help you out he will.

BTW if its not deep, try some megs ultimate detailer.

My advise would DO NOTHING to try to take the mark out. Contact dealer in person with picture of damage asap and I'm sure they will help you out either by them polishing out the damage or ordering a new tank . I had a similar situation on my 2015 CVO Limited Ultra and they replaced the tank. Good luck.

Hopefully the dealer will do the right thing.  Something like this should have been caught by the dealership when they did the Pre Delivery Inspection.  However, PDI is only as good as the guy doing it.  The dealer "should" be able to address this under warranty.

Like others have said, contact the dealer, let them know it's still where they left it. Hopefully they the care of it.
In 03 I bought a  RKC , it was delivered to my shop do to just a shoulder surgery,  as I was walking around the bike I noticed the leather on top of the saddle bags had a tiger stripe effect,  called them to tell them about it, and they gave me 1 from another bike off the showroom floor.
I think your dealer will do the right thing for you

Agreed :2vrolijk_21:... give them (dealer) the opportunity to make it right whether it is they try to buff it our or replace the tank. Anything you do they can say it made it worse and not do anything for you. :( >:(

I found a ding on my 2015 RGU front fender about a week after it was delivered. When I took the bike to the dealer they tried to fix it with the paintless dent removal. They did a hell of a job! In the sun you couldn't see the dent, but in the garage under the florescent lights I could see it. When the service questionnaire came from HD I put not happy with the explanation. Within two days the manager of the dealership called followed by the service manager assuring me they had a fender on order and it was replaced within a month. Harley must be serious on the questionnaires and holding the dealers responsible for happy customers! I was thrilled to not have to go argue with the dealer.

It's hard to tell much from a photo versus seeing it in person, but if it is in fact damage on the surface as opposed to something under the paint, depending on the depth it may be something that can be polished out.  At this point however, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR IT YOURSELF.  Contact the dealership as soon as possible, send them the photo, and ask them to come and take a look.  They shouldn't have delivered it with an obvious flaw, if it's as obvious as it seems from your photo.

If it's surface damage, they should step up and take care of it.  Could be damage from the assembly plant, or from the dealership while they were trying to install the heated grips, or whatever.  All we know for sure is your brother didn't damage it.  It would be much better to get it handled now versus waiting for him to get home and then have the dealer try to lay blame on him.

If it's an actual defect in the paint under the surface, that is covered by the two year "bumper to bumper" warranty.  To avoid nitpicking by H-D, once again it's best to get it handled ASAP.

Like others stated, contact the dealer. I noticed some slight damage to my inner fairing after I got my bars installed. I rode down to the dealer, and they ordered me a new inner fairing.

A good dealer wants a happy customer!  I bought a 13 CVO Breakout and there was a flaw on the tank....I found it after my deposit was taken.  I said either it gets fixed, or I don't want it.....I don't know how, but they got a tank the next day.  So, if the dealer is good...it will be made right!

This really is the key. The right guy can get most anything handled for you. Bad thing is there are many in the right position to get things handled but they may not have that skill.

Well you have a bunch of opinions that are just that opinions and mean nothing to the outcome. Have the owner tell the dealer and see what he says. Looking at the photo, think a sheet of 2000 sandpaper, some water followed by a non-agressive foam buffing pad  on a orbital buffer would make it go away, but then that is another useless opinion. But don't fix it yourself.
