Hoist a longer duration cam and more overlap mean higher RPM's to stay in the power band. More lift and lower duration lower the power band and increase your TQ numbers. The TC657 is a great cam. I am running it right now as we spaek.

The Evo's didn't like high lift. Tore 'em up if they were too high. Your right about the power band. You needed to be at least 3 grand for the cam to start kicking in. I guess there's still a lot for me to get used to about modifying these engines. My previous 2 TC Road Kings were left stock. This thing got me hooked on hot rodding it. Was any headwork needed for that lift or piston clearance issues? Thanks DC. Hoist! 8)

Seems like a high lift cam aimed at getting every last drop!

The SE 251 cam I run only has a .579 Lift and we had to Clarence the rocker boxes, add SE springs and beef up the p/rods. The spec-ed ones bent and we had to go with SE adjustable. Jim has had trouble with Andrews CROMO p/rods breaking/bending on AK's bike. I have found that reliability is a factor for a touring ride. This is why I am sticking with the 9.3:1 and the SE 251.

About gear drive cams. There is a lot of info here. There always seems to be issues with Hd engine shafts having too much run out or misalignment issues. Techs claim shafts are in tolerances and the install was perfect, but there are always issues. Sure the chain and tensioner wears but they are a h*ll of a lot more reliable than Gear drives. Gear drives are noisy also, just what we need more noise from a 110 that already sounds like it is comming apart. At .579 lift my inherent valvetrain noise  almost doubled. What will .657 sound like?

All of these mods are great if you are using them on a bar bike. On a bike I am running from California to DC these are not good risk management and noisy.

So Hoist, I personally applaud your wait an see attitude and not wanting to wring every drop out of a Touring bike. :2vrolijk_21:

Just to set the story straight. The TC 657's are very quite. I have a CVO 113 motor that is very quite.  It is very reliable and very quite and runs very cool. I have heard a 124 twin cam with a set of red shift 647's and it runs very quite as well. The 547's are more aggressive that the 657's.

One thing about Red Shift cams they are engineered to be quite and give you maximun power and TQ for your particular build. They are easy on your valve train. All I can say is try them you will like them.

One day they are noisy the next day they are not????

Make up our minds!

You know why I love this site, it keeps track of info so well;

Here is a quote from DCFIREMAN in this thread: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=12472.msg195227#msg195227

Just so everyone knows. The main reason HD uses chain driven cams is NOISE! The EPA has regs that the moco must follow. I am not saying that the crank Assembly's aren't the icing on the cake either. The chain assembly is also cheaper to buy.

When Zippers did my rebuild my crank was out .008. The motor was still under warranty and the Moco did cover it. The new assembly was .0005. So it was real close. You can't get much better than that.

For anyone who does the teardown to true the crank Assembly. Do yourself a favor and have it welded after truing.

You know if you really think about it. Most of use don't keep a bike stock. So you take the bike that you have soooooo much love for and have fun making it look and run better and be so much more reliable. Come to think of it they are soooo much more fun to ride when you are done.

Ironbutt the bike in question is a 2004 SEEG. Right now the lowers are not on the bike but I always have a fairing.

IRONBUTT I am very sure our paths will cross sometime very soon. As soon as the weather breaks and I get all the things done around the house that need to get done.

You will be very surprised how quite this motor is.
