Rain, Saddlebag Speakers, Everything Wet, Options?
« on: March 21, 2016, 10:28:34 AM »

I've been trying to avoid riding through heavy rain for one reason:  Heavy rain goes right through the saddlebag speakers and will absolutely soak everything in your saddlebag.  The last storm I rode through, I ended up with 6" of water in the bottom of my saddlebag, not good.

I've been trying to think of an easy way to cover the speakers when I see a big ass storm ahead of me.  Any suggestions?  Saddlebags are pretty much useless when everything is wet.

I was wondering about this topic just this morning. I am in the "what if" stage thou. I've been in several heavy rain storms so far and my bags stay dry inside. I'm worried that eventually they will get wet. I realize this doesn't help you, but hopefully someone will chime in with some advice.
If your bike is a 2012, we should have the same style speaker lid set up.

You're right, they look like crap but would probably do the job.

The second option might be enough for a light rain but I don't think they would work for a heavy rain where you end up with 6 inches of water in your saddlebags.

Thanks,

Cowboy

I use the desiccant packs to avoid mildew - after drying out.

I had another crazy thought.  I noticed that the Harley grilles appear to be able to be popped-off.

Maybe wrap some type of nylon around the grill and snap it back on.  Hell shouldn't be too hard to fabricate something with elastic to hold it in place until the grille is put back on.  - again temporary kind of like the A/C sock.

Mine have leaked a different times.  I got lucky.  Covered under waranty.

I don't have speakers but shouldn't these be waterproof so you don't water in your saddle bags?

I've been through a few good extended downpours....saddlebags have been dry so far! The 'lid socks' look like they might work....keep them in the rain gear pockets so you know where they are when needed.

I'm with you they're advertised as saddlebag speakers not aquariums. I would go back until they make it right. Most of the rain covers are for when your sitting still and are ugly.

Cycle Sounds makes lid covers. They work well. A change of speakers will help also. The ones I've seen leak are three way speakers and they leak around the tweeter.

Me too.  The owners of the few bikes I see locally with lid speakers haven't ever said anything.  Now I wonder if they're just the fortunate ones without the problem (yet) or if they've just not complained.

I had a 2012 street glide but didn't have water getting passed the speakers. At first I wondered how to get the water off of them, but quickly realized with the volume at 1/2 way the water just danced right off,

I have gotten caught in the rain a couple times here in the northwest, and also along the snake river. Ended up washing it at the Helena MT BestWestern at their bike wash setup, and didn't pay attention to the hose filling up the speakers... at least until I opened the lids and the water poured out! Still didn't have water inside though. Sorry not much help I know, but just saying it can be pretty water tight. Good luck.

I had the hybrid audio rear 5x7s. . They have bridged tweeters. .they won't leak. .  I always had dry saddle bags. .  The standard coaxials have a post right through the center.  Of course that will. Leak. .  Get the hybrid. .  Excellent. Choice. and sound amazing. . Stuart.
