Hydraulic clutch adjustment?
« on: April 17, 2016, 06:54:33 PM »

I just installed a low profile Scorpion with lock-up in my 2012 street glide. As I am letting the clutch lever out it doesn't engage until the last 1/4" to 1/8" of lever travel. Has anybody had this problem? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks, Ray

It could be any number of mechanical issues, or it could be there is still some air that needs to be bled out...  I would start there.  Once you're completely confident there is no air, then the best place to start is by measuring your actual clutch travel.  If the travel is less then the spec, and there is no air in the system, then there is a mechanical reason.  There is no such thing as "hydraulic clutch adjustment".  There is no adjustment method for a hydraulic clutch...

I could not find any info about the hydraulic clutch in the service manual. I will bleed it and see if that helps. Thank you

Really?  A factory MOCO service manual?  I have never seen a factory service manual for a bike with a hydraulic clutch that did not provide service information for the clutch assembly..    :nixweiss:

Are you looking in the CVO supplement or the standard manual? Plenty of information in the CVO manual

Ray, is the clutch you installed specifically designed to work with the Harley CVO hydraulic system?  Some aftermarket clutches are, and some are not.  Barnett has several different versions of the low profile Scorpion with lock-up listed on their site.  As best I can tell, a 2012 CVO would use this one:
----------
Scorpion Low Profile Lock-up Clutch- 2011-16 Big Twins- Hydraulic
Part# 608-30-33100
Notes:
Hydraulic- Low profile design fits under stock primary cover. Bolt on- No modifications required.
----------
So first make absolutely sure you got the right parts, then call Barnett's tech support.  There may be a mechanical issue with the stack height of the installed components that doesn't allow the hydraulic system to self adjust.  And check the simple stuff first, like the amount of fluid in the master cylinder.  Make sure the level is at or below the full line, and never higher.  Excess fluid will also cause a similar problem.

Jerry

Oh, btw, the information on the older model CVO hydraulic clutches isn't in the main Touring shop manual, but instead is covered in the CVO Supplement manual.

Barnett's Scorpion product doesnt require that you grind off the rod bit by bit until you get the travel correct.  It fits.

While you are bleeding the clutch, it's not a bad idea to flush the old fluid out and replace with new fresh fluid...

Let us know how the Barnett works out for you...

Ray,

You are not alone; this issue has been discussed before, such as here:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=102435.0.

That thread, along with the info here, should get you started.

I bled about 4 ounces of fluid through my clutch, fluid was nasty looking. No change. I am going to call Barnett.

I just spoke with Barnett and was instructed to remove the damper seat and damper dished spring. Dang, another $35.00 outer primary cover gasket. The gentleman on the phone said that will move my engagement towards the center of the lever travel. Lets hope so. Also just ordered my CVO supplement manual and parts catalog. Thanks for all the help. I'll report back when I get the change done.

I'm not running the Barnett, but the Bandit. I have the same issue as do most of the hydraulic setups. The aftermarket units seem to make the arrangement even worse than stock.
I don't believe taking those pieces out is going to help, but I'm hoping for your success.

What / how much, are they telling you to run for primary fluid?

Have you had any "squawking" yet??
