Let me point out that there is another culprit lurking (besides the A pillar) that can and will create a "blind spot" given just the right situation.  For example,  in your car/truck and you depart a fast food restaurant or other parking lot and the street is lower than the lot and curbing and your front end dips down slightly as you stop to scan both directions.

As with the A pillar deal,  the right speed of the bike or another car can easily get (hidden) behind your rear view mirror that is on your windshield..............been there and done that.

Yesterday I had lunch with a friend and told him my story. He told me he had done the same thing twice, his mirror was the culprit one time and his mailbox at the end of his driveway another.  It is difficult to see everything every time but my head has been on a swivel more since that episode.

Second the truck A-pillar deal.   Just about hit a  pedestrian who stepped off the curb as I was turning left on a green arrow---never saw her, until I did.  She jumped a bit and my mouth dropped open.  Even though I am careful after that, still pulled out in front of a car that I didn't see a couple of years later.  So I can sympathize with people that just don't see us--I are one of them.

We as bikers must and should be aware of ALL around us. I was told and shown by an Ohio State Patrol Officer how LITTLE we are on the highway. He took a pencil and held it in his hand outstretched and showed me how much that little pencil hid. Try it and you'll understand what I'm talking about. It's up to us as riders to be more aware just because of all the BLIND SPOTS that are built into vehicles. We as bikers know and understand these blind spots, but most drivers really don't understand how much is hidden by the "A", "B" posts and host of other things such as headrests, car seats, passengers, etc. Ride safe and have fun.
