CAMS.
« on: May 08, 2016, 11:32:41 PM »

I'm sure this is as boring as the oil debate, but what cams have you all found to be good at waking the CVO 110 motor up. In my 103, I waited 25K miles before installing the SE255 cams and SERT, and what a difference. Day and night. 6th gear roll on passing. It was a totally different machine. Now I have my CVO, it has SE255's, but there must be something better. MoCo never gives us everything we want the first time around, so they must have some thing.
Fueling 574 Reaper. T-Man, S&S, Andrews 57H?
Most likely, I will only install the cams, no head work. V&H Power Duals with 4" Rineharts, and a SERT. So what cam will work best?

I put GMR 577 cams in mine to go along with Fullsac headpipes and their 2" muffler cores.

The Kury TC 24D, GMR 600, T-Man 590 or 600SM, Zippers Red Shift 587 or 575.  They all have good points. Some may pull harder down low others pull all the way through the power curve. I just did a 113 build and didn't cut any corners. I could have gone with any cam I wanted but went with the TC 24D's. I am very happy so far. I do need to get it tuned.

I've seen some posts that show HP #'s breaking 100 on a bolt in cam alone. At least that is how I took the post. Is that possible?

Really just looking to wake up the motor, find a nice TQ curve that pulls from 1500-5000, and brings the bike to life.

I'm guessing I'll use the V&H PowerDuals head pipe, Rinehart 4" slip on mufflers, a SERT, and a cam. Just not sure which ones work best with out head work.

If you want to pull from 1500 then don't change cams. If you still need to change them then you will need to bump compression. Nothing is going to pull in that complete range. So decide within a 2500 range. Either low or middle or high. Then a cam can be picked.

Just to piggyback off of what a few implied, a good exhaust setup and tune with your stock cams can get you 100 TQ before 2500RPM, and keep 100 TQ to 5000RPM, maybe even a little farther.

I went through a stage where I was obsessed with a cam change. After an exhaust change/tune, I rarely think about cams anymore. The bike runs so good now, I'm scared to change anything even if it is supposed to be an improvement.

I understand what you said, HD will always leave things on the table to be upgraded. But for a heavy touring bike, the 255 isn't a horrible cam. It sounds about perfect for what you're wanting. If you are leaving the heads alone, I'm not sure if any bolt in cam is going to do anything to make you say "Wow, what a difference!!".

Thanks scott7d. That is pretty much what I was asking. I know my stock 103 TK was a dog in stock configuration. After installing the 255 cam in that, wow what a difference.
I just figured that there must be a better cam for a stock 110 CVO that I didn't know about yet.
And to make matters worse, I'm a n OTR trucker. I bought the bike, had it one day, covered 225 miles, and it's been locked away in the garage while I've been gone. And initially only saw about 30 mpg on first two tanks of gas, and I know I got into the 40's with the 103.
I want to get home and ride it, and get the pipe and SERT ordered and installed and go from there. But this sitting on the road wishing and dreaming about it is killing me.

I hear ya! Once you get your stage 1 goodies on with a good tune, I’m sure you will see better miles per gallon. I could also genuinely feel a difference in power also after I got mine done. Especially down low.

I’m not saying I won’t get cams later, but if I do, I will go ahead and get a bigger throttle body, maybe a little head work, and bump compression up. If I’m going to upgrade a second time, I just want to get that all over with while they have things apart and be done with it. If you browse dyno sheets here, you can see it’s definitely possible to get more low end AND more carry to the right side of the graph with parts that work well together.

Regardless of what you do, good luck and ride safe!

Steve Cole put up some actual numbers last year.  I took the liberty and charted them.  Seeing is believing.  Of course, your mileage may vary.

My local dealer where I bought my bike will install the pipes and do a tune on it.
Is there any place in Central Florida that does a great job tuning bikes?
I did see in another thread, a guy named Patrick (?) Gator HD in Leesburg. Any idea if that guy is still there or a better place to have it tuned?
