Rates vary widely by state, so comparing to what someone pays in Iowa or Kansas won't do you any good in New York.  Fortunately, most insurance companies these days will give you quick quotes on the phone or the 'net, so you can get results tailored specifically to you and your exact location.  In my state the companies take turns being the high cost provider, so changing every year or two has become the norm rather than sticking with one company forever.  I do an internet quote from the major companies every year before renewal time.

I switched everthing to Geico.  I had used Nationwide for 30 years, because I knew the agent personally, and thought that was the right thing to do.  You know, spend your money locally, and all that.  And, I had never had to turn in a claim.  Seems to me that should be a factor in rates, but all I ever got was increases in premiums!  Then, one day a few years back, OTIS told me what he paid for Insurance.  I couldn't believe it!  He was paying a fraction of what I was.  I have "Stated Insurance" on Maybelle, which started at $50K, and decreases yearly.  I think it's $40K this year, but I can Insure it for whatever I've got in it, with documented invoices, for an additional .85 per thousand.  My monthly premium is $31.00.  I have $1000.00 deductible, $100,000 liability, and $40,000 personal injury.  It would be cheaper if I went with WV minimums, but this is the package I chose.  Nationwide was much, much higher.  I tried to negotiate the cost down with Nationwide, telling my agent friend what Geico had quoted, but to no avail.  Later--HUBBARD

Insurance shopping is a process where each person has to do the homework themselves because there are too many variables to make it a fair "apples to apples" comparison.
As mentioned above location affects rates in things like high theft area or accident rates or even weather problems like flooding. Then you can have things like southern states can ride all year long with increased chances of accidents etc. vs. northern states that have to store bikes over winter.
Personal things like your age, riding experience, accidents, tickets and whether you have had safety training can come into play as to whether you pay more or get a discount. Then some companies give a discount for multiple insurance policies such as car/motorcycle and homeowner's insurance with same company.
Rates will vary depending on full coverage or deductibles or replacement values too.

Shop reputable legitimate companies only of course.  Shop comparing apples to apples on rates and coverage is what I do.  Insurance for me is a commodity, was not always so. Trying to be loyal to a company or an agent, considering ridiculous rate increases I have received (with a claim history of $0) has caused me to shop this like I shop for gas.

I shop it every year, & every 2-3 years I change companies.  Would prefer to stay with one, would be easier, but when companies increase their rates by 10-15% just because they feel like it or whatever, and other companies are 20% or more less expensive, then shopping is my best solution.

I do the same on all insurance and when I can I try to get as much of it as I can with one company.

If you use the search feature for "insurance" you'll find a number of threads asking the same question.

Equally important to cost is the service (pay out without any problems) that you get when you file a claim.  For that reason, Allstate is probably not the cheapest but it's who I have my motorcycle insurance with.  Safe driver discount helps.

I understand where I live makes a differance...I was with progressive 18 years never single claim and only 1 speeding ticket.about 12 years ago so them charging me $1000 ayear over Travelers is just not right in mind...I plan on shopping around I will check all the big company's  I was just wondering if one is better for bikers

Shop around and ask about rider discounts. Multi-bike, safe rider classes, Hog or other memberships. Home owner.

X2 :2vrolijk_21: I began my motorcycle coverage with Progressive then left when they dramatically increased their rates just over a year ago. I switched to GEICO for both my auto and motorcycle policies ....then recently began driving for Uber and needed ride-share insurance which GEICO didn't offer. Farmers offered the ride-share automobile coverage for a reasonable price and quoted me dramatically lower motorcycle rates using Foremost. I recommend them based on rates only as I happily haven't needed to file any claims :)!

If you shop with a local independent agent that has a variety of companies to write for you get the best deal. At renewal time get your agent to shop it again and you'd be surprised at the differences in price, that's going with AAA+ companies also. Local agents can usually beat online quotes too with same companies.  :nixweiss: I speak with some authority, been a silent partner in a local independent agency since 2002. FWIW

I'm currently insured with Safeco, I carry 300k+ on liabilities with bikes, more on auto. It's all just a racket, but we gotta have it.

Been With Geico for several years. They are probably not the cheapest but rates have been stable and give a good discount for rider training.  Could probably benefit from multi policy but have several autos at another company that I do not want to change.  Never had a claim so cant comment on their payout process.  Couple of reasons I like them is they have a brick and mortar store near me where I can deal with real people and a bit sentimental as they never cancelled my elderly dad after several wrecks up until he had to quit driving.

Prior to retiring I was an insurance guy. Here are a few suggestions. Buy from reputable large company. Stay with large reputable company vs searching rates. Buy ALL the insurance you can afford. Try to avoid local agents, buy direct.
Deductible - $1000 not a good deal. $1K vs $250.00 is minimal and think about 2 claims in a year. Gets expensive.
Liability  - $100,000 coverage (average). You cause an accident, newer Escalade runs off road to dodge you and totals his truck ($91,000) and hits a newer anything that has $22,000 in damage. Guess what you are out of pocket $13,000 min + fees and the guys laptop which got broken. Makes $300,000 liab for a few bucks more each month very cheap.
Best deal for coverage on your bike is a ACV policy (actual cash value). This is really all you are owed, but be prepared to show the invoices and reciepts for what makes this ACV more than one which no modifications.
Try to stay with your large reputable company and fight the urge to change everytime the rates change. When you call in that sketchy your fault claim, first thing they do is check your years of service and on-time payment records. Have 20-30 years with U._._._. and good payment records and you are moved to top of the scale and they will bend over backwards to make you happy. Your record shows you changed companies 3 times in 10 years, maybe no claims, just price hunter and you will not get the same hands on help the long timer did. You may not think so now, but this can be very very important when the judge awards someone a couple hundred grand over your policy and you company says no problem we will handle it vs how do you want to finance that loan?

I tried to be a loyal customer to a captive agent for years, I found out the hard way that the loyalty didn’t go both ways. Most  all the insurance companies share info and is shown on the clue report, even your credit rating plays a part of the premiums, driving record is important too. As for claims submitted and payed is also a huge factor. Lots of big insurance companies have several names they go by these days but it’s under the same umbrella, one name for standard another name for non-standard.  One should not purchase on price alone, lots of variables.

The insurance laws varies greatly from state to state as do the premiums, zip codes are important in prices due to their data. I’m speaking from my experience from the great state of SC. I only deal with top rated companies myself.

YMMV
