Wrap the cat?
« on: May 18, 2016, 10:41:15 AM »

I have a question on heat from the catalytic converter on my 16 CVO limited. Has anyone tried wrapping with header wrap to get rid of the excessive heat on the right side? I am undecided between wrapping or gutting the converter. any thoughts?

I seriously doubt using the pipe wrap product on just the convertor would make much difference; the heat it retains in the cat would just heat the pipe up even more right behind it.  It might make a slight difference to your right ankle however.  One thing you need to think about is how pipe wrap causes pipes to quickly corrode and fail.  If it were me, especially since you live in California where emission testing of bikes could still become law someday, I would buy a replacement headpipe without a catalyst and store the original pipes just in case, rather than just do a quick and dirty gutting of the stock system.

Check out the offerings of Fullsac.  They are highly recommended around here, offer CVOHarley.com members a discount, and have outstanding customer service.

Wrapping any exhaust pipe will shorten it's life dramatically. Instead of transferring the heat it builds up and metal fatigue will cause the exhaust pipe to fail. As suggested give Fullsac a call.

I had an extra cat-less pipe that I wrapped with DEI's best wrap. The change in felt heat was amazing, I had it on for over a year and removed it and reinstalled the original and sold the wrapped one when I sold the bike. The guy who bought the header removed the wrap because he didn't like the goldish color, he only wanted a cat-less pipe, the pipe showed no accelerated rusting or change in appearance from when I had wrapped it earlier.
So I have to disagree with the wrapping makes for deteroriation of the pipe comments, sorry, but it did not happen on mine. Also I wash the bike weekly and never made any effort to prevent water on the pipe. I would start it and let pipe dry but otherwise nothing special.
I would do it again if my ankle was burning thru my boot like it did on that bike.
