I use bore gages every day. If those were my only two choices I would definitely choose the 6" one ( unless you need 6+"). From the description  it appears to be a better tool. The most important  thing about bore gages is the consistency of the person using them. If cost is a factor there are much less expensive options than Snap-on.
Mitutoyo and Brown&Sharpe are both top quality names in that type of tool. I don't know who actually makes the tool for Snap-on. I hope this helps you .

the micrometer used is just as important as the bore gauge,we use mititoyo for bore gauges & micrometers

All of my measuring tools, including my bore gages are L.S. Starrett, purchased 30 or so years ago when I made my living with them...  At that time they were 100% American Made, although I believe they now outsource some amount of their manufacturing...

Depending on how often you will be using the dial bore gage you may want to consider Fowler or SPI brands. I agree with the others on Mitutoyo and Starrett, those are my go to brands as well. I keep the good stuff in the inspection room but have several Fowler's on the shop floor for in process inspection. We set them and check them throughout the day with ring gages, much easier and more accurate than setting with micrometers.

This is a Fowler set available at MSC Industrial Supply:http://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/89305924

No fowler for me, they used to be better.
The snap-on is a ripoff.
I use a Sunnen dial bore gauge with their setting fuxture which I believe is made by Federal.
Second in line Mititoyo and all my mikes and gauges are that or Starrett.

x3 and that old.  Still use them whenever needed.  Still accurate.  Were dad's before they were mine.  The bits I've added over the years were Starrett too.  Hard to break a good habit.

I have a full set of Inside and outside Brown and Sharpe micrometers which is fine but when boring and checking cylinders I know when I used my dad's old sunnen dial bore guage it certainly was faster and more accurate, for the amount I use it I thought $3000 was a bit much (including the setting tool) In Canada the Snap on tools are much easier to get for me and for about $400 CAD I thought it was ok but haven't used the snap on one, they have the 2 different models but there isn't a lot of details to know which one out of the 2. I wondered if any one had tried them. Thanks for the input.

I have to ask,why are you looking for a bore gauge? if your boring cylinders,i would think youde know good from bad.if your just looking for one to check your cylinders, you better look into TQ plates too
