Went the Haird route on this. My RGU was working fine with my old craftsman opener. It went out and replaced with a new chamberlain. HD opener will not work with it without mods as GRC mentioned. Just picked up the smallest remote chamberlain makes and put it in my RG glove pouch. Went a bit further and put a piece of Velcro on it and stuck to side liner out of the way. Takes an extra few seconds to take my hand off the grip and reach inside pouch to open but I can live with that.

I have one CVO bike connected to my home garage door but would like to open the garage door at my seasonal place as well. Can you open 2 different garage doors in 2 separate locations with one transmitter?
Sure. But you'll need a second receiver at the seasonal place.

Do you need to have both bikes present when programming and do them both at the same time? Or can you simply do one and then later do the other one?

One bike is in the shop and the new one is at home, so if I program the new one now, will I have to reprogram the old one when I get it back?

No, both bike do not have to be present.  Heck my wife's 09 heritage was programed in 09, we have had 8 other bike programed or removed between then and now.  Currently have five bikes programed to one receiver.
