The one that HD sells to fit under the oil filter to catch and drain the run off. I used to just let it drip, or use a piece of cardboard. I was wondering how well it works and if it is a good thing to purchase.

Thanks

Save your money. I made this out of two round empty plastic spray bottles, I had to use two to get the length I wanted, it drains between the frame and floorboard I overlapped the joint a little and glued them together with clear silicone been using it for years now

And a pic of it positioned on the bike

Yes I use the K&N oil filters with the nut welded on the end, makes life easier to get the filter loose and off.

I purchased that orange drain pan. First off, you need to hold it in place with 1 hand, while turning out the filter with the other. Kinda awkward to do. There is no way to make it stay in place unless you hold it. Plus as I removed the filter, the pan shifted and I still mad a mess on the floor. I've done just as good with cardboard and some plastic. It's a waste of $10 IMHO.

Maybe when Harley redesigns the engine in another hundred years they can find a location for the oil filter where it hangs vertically.  Or maybe just eliminate it altogether in another cost cutting frenzy.

I've tried the cut down 2 liter drink bottle, a couple of different purchased drain tray devices, and finally a large heavy duty plastic zip-lock style bag.  Break the filter loose first, then slide the bag over the filter as far as it will go and spin the filter off through the bag.  Other than needing three hands to do it, the bag method at least has the potential to eliminate handling the always messy filter.  Oh, I almost forgot, I also tried the "drill or punch a hole in the filter" to drain off as much oil as possible with the tray before actually removing it.  While that helped with the gusher as you loosen the filter, it still requires three hands and a lot of shop towels.  I've suggested to others, but haven't tried myself, that they install a hoist and rig it up so they can lift the bike so the left side faces straight down.  I'm still waiting to hear back on that one.

Waste of money.  I tried it once and it's just as messy with it as without.

Take the $10 or so, purchase some Simple Green and use it to clean that area well after changing the filter.  That seems to work best for me plus I get to clean a part of the bike I may not always clean well during normal washes.... :2vrolijk_21:

It helps me if I put a couple of paper towels under the filter to catch the drips. Seems to get most of it.

Does an oil filter come w/the kit or can stock filters work with it? Your picture appears to have something other than stock (re-usable :nixweiss:) filter.

You have to furnish your own filter stock will work, I use a k&p reuseable filter.
This is a great kit i love that i can refill my filter without spilling a drop at oil changes.
