Hydraulic lifters
« on: June 27, 2016, 03:11:38 PM »

my hydraulic lifters are gone and now I assume my season
on my FLTRSE3 is over. Lucky one I'm, i can ride my Buell.
I assume HD-Company is using the standard parts in the
110-motor and no SE-parts.

Sorry to see your bike down like that... :(

My FLTRSE3 has just over 15k miles and I think I'll be doing the lifters this winter; cam bearings too.

Yep, I had the front intake lifter look like that at 20,000 miles...

If those are the original lifters, then they aren't the later SE lifters with the larger bearings for the roller.  Those weren't placed into production until the 2013 model year.  And there have been reports already of some failures with those lifters as well.

I'd suggest S&S for replacements, not H-D or SE.  And it's starting to look like people might want to start inspecting and replacing even the aftermarket lifters every 20,000 miles.  The problem seems to have more to do with how Harley set up the rest of the valve train on the 110 and not just the substandard lifters.

I feel your pain as I've lost two 110" motors due to lifter failure.  My 2012 CVO Ultra has 38k on the replacement motor from July 2014.  The original motor suffered catastrophic failure from a disintegrated lifter at 24k.  Guess I'd better change the lifters for sure.  I'm probably living on borrowed time, lol.

Whoa... lost the 110" on my '13 when it disintegrated its lifter at 24k too. Now 14k on the new motor so I guess I need to look at doing this too.

If those are the original lifters in your 2009 bike, then they are the Harley "C" lifter which is about the worst of the recent stock lifters.  If my memory is correct they only used the "C" lifter for two or three years before they replaced them with the current SE lifter.  I install new lifters about every other oil changes - which makes it roughly about every 10,000 miles.

I hope you insist on complete disassembly of your motor for a thorough cleaning of the shrapnel.  And close inspection of the oil pump.  I'd replace the oil cooler as well.    :(

I thought I was practicing abundant caution on any newer bike I had hands on suggesting the lifters become consumables at 20,000 or so.  The sad thing here you're not really extreme on your number Scott.  Some have died in their teens.

Had (or at least should have) opened the cam chest to replace chain tensioners on the early twin cams by 20,000 or so if you wanted to be sure you weren't facing imminent danger.  That's been improved (somewhat) but now need to go in to the cam chest and throw away a set of lifters at the same frequency if one wants to feel secure.

Tell me again why it is we like this company so much?

The lifers in my FLTRSE3 failed at 45K miles, two days after I traded it for my FLTRXSE in Oct of 2011.  I was lucky, dealer owned it when they failed.

Replaced mine at 24,000  Mine were ok but I'm glad that I did it anyway. It was my first time inside one of these 110's. Those lifters get a tremendous amount of pressure. Take your plugs out and try spinning the motor in high gear! No wonder they can't take it! I hope the S&S premiums can handle it!
