Chirping from Engine
« on: July 10, 2016, 05:41:50 AM »

I have a 2012 CVO.  I left the HOG meeting yesterday and I could hear chirping every once in a while but didn't realize it was my engine at the time with all the cars around me.  When I got home and parked in the garage I could hear it very well, it sounded a little like a belt on a car.  I shut it down and went back a little while later and started it up to check it out and the noise was gone, any ideas what that could be?  I checked all the fluids and they are good!

Check your exhaust heat shields. They are held on with typical automotive worm screw clamps. When they loosen up they squeak on the pipes as the engine moves back and forth.

Chirping from Engine

I have a 2012 Street Glide with about 15K miles.  On the way home from the HOG meeting yesterday I could hear chirping off and on but didn't realize it was my bike with all the cars around me.  When I got home and pulled into the garage I realize it was my bike.  I shut it down and came back to it later but the noise was gone, it sounded like a belt on a car chirping.  I checked all the fluids and they were fine, any ideas?

Haven't heard it on my '12 Model yet, but heard it my '02 Ultra.  If I remember correctly, it was the primary out of adjustment, but I could be wrong.  Jody is helping me change the oil in Maybelle today, and I'll ask him how he fixed that before, and report back later today.  Later--HUBBARD

Exactly. Mine chirped sometimes and sure sounded like it was coming from the primary but it was a lifter. Get it checked before it fails catastrophically and takes out the motor.

I would not continue to ride that bike until I found the cause of the noise, and here is why I say that.  2011 and 2012 CVO's seem to be the ones most likely to suffer a major lifter failure, which can easily cause many thousands of dollars worth of damage to the engine.  Yes it could be something simple like a heat shield, rubber muffler support, motor mount, or even an exhaust leak.  Those are things I'd put on the checklist as well.  But if it isn't one of those things, I'd strongly suggest having the lifters checked out ASAP.  If it would make the noise all the time you could try to trace it with a stethoscope, since it could also be from the primary side (compensator issues are also pretty common).  But I wouldn't just wait until the next time the noise gets worse.  That could be the time it fails completely.

I took it over to the local Harley dealer and heard the noise just about every time I stopped but I had to wait for the shop to open, they open at 1100hrs on Sunday.  They came out and we started the bike and of course NO noise.  He told me they charge $100 to check it out by taking it for a ride and hopefully they can duplicate it and if not he’s not sure what they can do.  I have ask that they at least check the lifters, it will be a couple of days they told me.  Fingers crossed!

Thank you all for your assistance!  I'll let you know.

If they're gonna be in there to check them, anyway, I'd just have them replaced for peace of mind.  And then at least if you eliminate the lifters as a possibility and still have the noise, you can be fairly certain it's nothing quite as serious, whatever the real culprit is.

Have the dealer take it apart for an inspection rather than waste time on a road test

Two excellent suggestions are shown above.  If you are trying to get them to do this as part of an ESP claim, it appears they would rather wait until you have a major failure before doing anything.  Typical of way too many Harley dealerships these days, IMHO.  It's no skin off their noses if they send you back out with a ticking time bomb that leaves you stranded somewhere.  Btw, if this is an ESP issue, you don't have to go to that dealership unless you want to.  The ESP covers repairs at many independent shops, not just Harley dealers.  Contact the ESP folks and ask for a list of approved shops in your area.

If you don't have an ESP and are footing the bill yourself, then don't screw around with them, just tell them to change the lifters to whatever lifters you prefer.  Trust me, if the engine has the stock "C" lifters in it you will almost assuredly need to change them at some point anyway.  There are many people changing out lifters before any symptoms become evident, just based on the history of the CVO110 and lifter failures.  Think of it as another preventative maintenance item where you spend a little to hopefully prevent a big bill down the road.

And if it is a lifter making the noise, the cam lobe it rides on is also ruined.  :'(
