And if it is a lifter making the noise, the cam lobe it rides on is also ruined.  :'(
John

Sounds like your describing what I heard in my bike stopped and had it trailered home, lifter roller was starting to fail and cam was ruined, change the lifters.

If you find it's a lifter, and the cams, also change the cam bearings...  Inspect the oil pump for wear from the shrapnel.  And clean and flush everything, especially the oil pan and oil cooler.

Mine made that chirp in New Orleans and 5 hours later in Nacogdoches the motor was toast. It doesn't take long.

Take a can of WD-40 or any spray lube and give the rubber exhaust hangers under your saddle bags a shot. Those things can make all sorts of squeaky noises that seem to come from all over the bike. If that is the noise source it will stop immediately. Cheap and quick. Hope this helps.

My 06 did the same thing. Used some silicone spray on the rubber and all was good. Worth a try.

My 11 SERG does that when the drive belt tension is loose. It will do it when letting off the throttle especially when cold. I would check it before tearing into the motor. I replaced my lifters at 35 miles so I wasn't ready to tear into it but found the belt issue rather quickly,

I took the bike to the HD shop and they checked it out for $100.  They said they tightened some nuts and bolts but it was still doing the chirping when I left the shop.  I took to back to the shop and when I grabbed the tail pipe it stopped so I believe it is NOT the lifters which makes me feel better. I will put it up on my lift and check it out myself.  Thank you all for your assistance.

Glad that you found your source of noise......I still would get those lifters changed before you have an issue. A lot cheaper to change 4 lifters, than a complete motor. With those lifters, its a matter of when not If you will have a problem.

The HD shop was suppose to look at the lifters as well and told me they were fine.

The HD shop was suppose to look at the lifters as well and told me they were fine.

There is no way they can diagnose lifters as "fine" without pulling exhaust, cam cover, gas tank, push rods and some other bits and there's no way a dealership is doing all that for a $100 labor.  Unfortunately you likely paid a C-Note for a walk-around from a "tech" who is not yet senior/skilled enough that the shop can more easily afford to have him not actually working on bikes but instead walking around bikes doing "diagnoses" by listening for things while he sucks his soda dry.

Look at it this way, the skills for which you paid a $100 were such that they may (or may not) have found a loose bolt or two but could not find what you easily found as a recurring noise all by yourself.  It was you that found the source and not them.  So; who you gonna trust (pardon the GhostBusters reference there)?

sounds pretty sketchy to me,i hope you find your noise.its usually VERY easy to distinguish inner engine noise from mounts, covers,or anything outside the motor (how did they "check" the lifters??)

They obviously didn't check the lifters.  I think we all know that, but it's up to the bike's owner to decide what he wants to do.

I think many of us mentioned the exhaust mounts back at the beginning, but obviously those suggestions were not heeded if in fact that's what turns out to be the noise.  If lubricating the mounts completely eliminates the chirping, great.  But don't be lulled into complacency concerning those lifters.  The failure rates were high enough that Harley management responded with different lifters for the 2013 model year.  That is pretty rare for Harley, and gives you an idea of how much those failures were getting to them in warranty costs.

They didn't look at your lifters for $100...  No way.  They didn't even find your squeaky muffler mount for your $100...     ;)

Oops.  Looks like I was late to the "advice" party.  (What they all said...)
