Key Fob Lock/Unlock Problem
« on: July 11, 2016, 10:22:37 AM »

I relocated my Sirius Satellite antenna over the weekend on my 14 Ultra Limited. In doing so, I must have inadvertently disconnected a wire affecting my key fob. Now my key fob will not lock/unlock the bike. I found out when I got to work this am. (the lock/unlock on the dash panel works fine)  I'm pretty sure it's not the battery since the bike starts fine and no alarm problems. Before I take the fairing off again, I was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction as to what wire I may have unplugged.

Does the lock / unlock switch on your dash work? If so, everything should still be connected.  Check the battery in your fob.  If it still doesn't work, you're going to have to pull the fairing off again and check to see what, if anything, you made it disconnected. By the way, the antenna for your fob is underneath the seat. Did you remove that?

Yes, the Lock/Unlock on the dash work fine. I didn't realize there was a battery in both the key and the fob. I will replace both and give it a shot.

CR2032 in both the kay and the fob. Pretty standard battery and available at most auto parts stores.

Well, I'm stumped. I replaced the batteries in both key fobs & security fobs. Checked the fuses and tested the relays. Still no luck trying to lock/unlock using the key fob. The dash panel works just fine. Any ideas?

If the system worked fine right before you removed the fairing, and hasn't worked since, I think I'd take another look inside the fairing.  I've attached a drawing of the sound system and highlighted the module and antenna for the power locks.  I suggest you make sure the antenna is still where it belongs, and the harness connection to the module is secure and no wires have pulled out of the connector.

Jerry, thanks for the diagram. Very helpful. I check the wiring of the Power lock module and it appears to be in good shape. More importantly, I mounted the new bracket for the Sirius antenna on the front of the Power lock module. See pic. Is it possible I fried the Power lock module with the new bracket. I was fairly careful not to tighten it too tight. Thoughts?

It's the wireless actuation that's not working; correct?  From the switches you say it still works fine?

If so rather than the entirety of the lock module make your first suspicion that you've somehow shielded the antenna.  That's the cheapest and about the easiest possible solution.  So it's a good place to start.

Perhaps you've pinched the antenna lead?  If so that also fits in your descriptions; though it's a more expensive fix.  Good luck getting it sorted.

I will let you know what I find out. Thanks for your help, I would have never gotten this far without it.

Take that sirus radio nub and place it outside the fairing. Right next to vent behind windshield. It is black and waterproof, nobody will notice it and it works 10x better there.

How did you think you "fried" the component? Did you apply heat to weld?

What do you use to mount it with when you move it to outside the fairing? It's a magnet so it will need to stick to something.... I'm pretty sure I fried it with the new bracket. When the magnet was placed on the new bracket, it most likely magnetized the whole bracket. The power lock module is nothing more than a circuit board pack gel. I'm pretty sure the magnetized bracket fried the board.

First things first.  Remove the XM antenna and bracket from the module mounting stud and move them as far from the module as possible.  Try the lock fob and see if it now operates.  I would hope that Harley would have specified shielding for a module they mount in very close proximity to a stereo amplifier, other electronics, and speakers with magnets in them, but considering all the other obvious things they didn't think of over the years who knows.  I doubt putting that magnet close to the module would "fry" it, but it may be causing some kind of interference with the signal.  It's worth a try.

As for bakon's suggestion to mount the XM antenna outside of the fairing, we've had a few discussions about that very thing around here in the past.  I for one think it's a great idea to move it out in the open, like we do on automobiles, for the best possible reception.  As for mounting it, I'm partial to a 3M mounting tape, sold under the Scotch brand as catalog number 4011, exterior grade mounting tape.  It's grey in color with a red peel-off backing, and I use it for all kinds of things.  Even though it says it's permanent, it can be removed with some effort and without damaging the surface in my experience, in case you're worried about that.

3m tape was my choice too. Magnets can hurt circuits but usually on memory items. Not function circuits (usually only cause interference).
