Engine hard to start
« on: July 12, 2016, 01:58:12 PM »

My engine is very stubborn these days. Yesterday it took 6 or 7 start button pushes before it turned over. Lots of popping and backfiring noises. They sound like small caliber gun shots. Can anyone help me diagnose this? Lot's of thanks in advance!

1.  Load test the battery.  It may be getting weak and not able to crank the engine over fast enough.

2.  Make sure the automatic compression releases are working.

3.  Improper ignition timing caused by a bad crank position sensor or a severely worn or weak compensator.

Are you just having a problem with starting, or does the bike run worse than before even after it's started?  When you turn the engine off, do you get any clunks or noises from the primary?

Just throwing out some ideas.

Hi Jerry...

1. Battery indicator gauge reads at 14 volts when running. I will have dealer load test it

2. My rookie mechanic badge thinks that the ACR is what is not working; how can I tell? is this a dealer mechanic question also?

3. I sure hope it's not this :(

My problem is just starting. Bike runs good after the initial dry pops and backfires and multiple pushes of the start button. I've read here that the compression on these engines is what sometimes causes them not to turn over easily.

Any more thoughts, please send them my way :)

Thanks and God bless.

14v while running is the charging system and not what the battery does while you're starting the engine.

Can you do a compression test?

Good luck getting it sorted out.  Hope you don't find anything too extreme.  Something as simple as a weak/bad battery would be nice.
