Options for new crank on a torque build
« on: July 23, 2016, 07:04:19 PM »

I am buying parts for an upcoming torque build. Trying to achieve torque in the 130 ft. lbs. range. It seems like most people opt for the S&S crank with good results. I don't need the most expensive, but also don't want to skimp on bad parts, either. I don't abuse the bike by any means. No sudden throttle twists at low RPM, no hard downshifting, etc.

Would the S&S be the most practical bet? Will be a 113" build, clutch already addressed.

Thank you!

Either the S&S crank, or take yours and send it to Darkhorse to be rebuilt, trued, plugged, welded. I would just price them, either solution is rock solid. With the S&S you get the advantage of stronger rods, over your stock rods.

If you ride as you described, why bother?

If you are just looking for a smoother ride and some assurance for piece of mind, send yours to Darkhorse to be trued, balance and welded.

My goal over time is to replace all of the suspect 110 parts, the crank being one of them. Also, the dyno tune with the stock crank worries me a bit. I won't ride like that, but the dyno will inevitably introduce some stress. I've talked to people with crank issues just from normal riding on a stock bike. It just seems like one of the investments that's good to do while we are in there.

You have the right idea.  Many people do it backward, spending all the money on the fancy stuff and nothing on the basic structures that hold it all together.  I liken it to building a ten million dollar house on a ten dollar foundation.

Either the S&S crank or the Darkhorse rebuild of your Harley crank will be a HUGE upgrade over the standard parts.  As someone already mentioned, the S&S comes with better rods, but you can also upgrade the rods with Darkhorse.  If you haven't done it already, check out what Darkhorse offers and compare to what you can get from S&S.

As Jerry said start with solid foundation. I went with a S&S crank setup. Nothing wrong with Darkhorse (depends on how fast you want it or are willing to wait)
I also went for a high torque 113 build. http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=8027;area=showposts;start=30

If it were mine, I would go S&S vs trying to strengthen the stock flywheel, If I were to make a choice between the two.

Don`t forget the "Timken" conversion in the crank case for peace of mind.

You might consider the P3R Crank  http://www.p3rflywheels.com/  or https://www.facebook.com/P3R-Flywheels-1395670874091175/

Harleytuner stated it well (in another thread elsewhere).  "As far as comparing the P3R to the S&S, I don't think there's anything to choose. Not even in the same league.  Both are good, one is better. Some will be willing to spend the money.

I appreciate the responses! I decided that I am for sure going to reinforce that part of the bike. I will check out that P3R assembly now, looks interesting as well as the Timken!

LC110, that looks like a monster!! If I get anywhere close to your results, I will be a happy rider!

1000's of S&S cranks in service with pretty much 0 failures,P3R crank looks like a very nice product.but time will tell
