Crankshaft end play
« on: August 02, 2016, 01:01:02 PM »

I have a question. In the process of installing my forth compensator on my 2008 and while everything was removed I just happened to grab the crankshaft where the comp mounts and gave it a little back and forth. There is definitely some play although slight. Is this normal? Thanks for any information.

if you have everything off there at the compensator do a runout check.

First u need the specs for this from your service manual.   Flexible armed dial indicator is what was used to check mine.

Your going to have play side to side and towards you the quest is to know how much.

Thanks, my son has one of those dials. He is in the auto repair business. Will borrow and see what I find. Do you know what the tolerance should be on a 2008 110 touring engine? Thanks.

I don't have a 2008 service manual which is where I suspect you will find the crank tolerances.   I will check the digital versions of the ones I have for 11-16 and see what I can find.

was unable to find specs for in the bike, only the ones for in a truing stand.   Adding them here for reference.  Again this is for a 2011, maybe someone with a 2008 can see if theirs are different.

Specs for "in the bike" are in the table at the bottom.

Pretty sure they're the same as for '08.

Glens I am not sure that is the case, as the 6 items listed start with 1. a truing stand from figure 3-141 and state mount crank in a truing stand.  I see no where do they delineate to saying in the bike as it is part of the 6 steps and even say compare the results of this to the table in 3-46.

I would recommend verifying with HD for clarification.   :nixweiss:

"Runout (shaft measured in case)"

And "End Play" has to be "measured in case".

At least that's what I'm seeing in the bottom table...

The only way you can measure end play is in the cases.  I'm also thinking you would need to have the compensator nut installed and torqued to get an accurate reading.  The engines with the straight bearings, as opposed to the old Timken setup, do have more endplay.

According to my just found service manual supplement for the 2008 CVO, crankshaft end play should be no more than 0.010 in or 0.254mm. Thanks for everyone's input. Will proceed and hope for the best.

the run out spec in the manual is so large so HD dosnt have to warranty lower ends, your looking for 0.00 (which aint going to happen) to .0035,anything over that is getting bad and you`ll start seeing oil pump & cam plate bushing damage at .0065,anything around .008 -up and you need to have the lower end done.as far as endplay goes, with the comp. not on,in a non Timken motor, you will have end play.worry about (& check it ) with the comp. on & torqued
