How to choose the right performance shop
« on: August 27, 2016, 05:47:27 AM »

Hi All

I'm looking to get some performance head work done to my 2015 CVO street glide, I know there are good & bad shops and was wondering what should I be looking out for  in a shop to do my cylinder Heads and other performance needs

Can anybody recommend some performance shops for me and the reason why you chose them ?

Cheers Darren

make sure headwork is done for YOUR build, not just "off the shelf" cookie cutter work
make sure they have a flow bench
make sure they are willing to talk & listen to what you want instead of trying to convince you of what you want
make they have the right equipment and the work is actually done in house

Pardon my ignorance---what is a flow bench?

A flow bench is a device used for testing the internal aerodynamic qualities of an engine component.

Used primarily for testing the intake and exhaust ports of cylinder heads of internal combustion engines. It is also used to test the flow capabilities of any component such as air filters, carburetors, manifolds or any other part that is required to flow gas. It is one of the primary tools of high performance engine builders and porting cylinder heads would be pretty much hit or miss without it.

When I saw your comment regarding what a flow bench is for I remembered two days in '82 when a couple of guys I hung around with  spent a full day measuring flow thru numerous air filters on a Super Flow Flow Bench. These filter elements were to be used on Unlimited, what is now World of Outlaws type cars, 410" 800HP engines. NONE of the filters were as large as a HD Ventilator, nor as well built and while some were better than others all would supply plenty of air for a pair of cylinders that produced approx 200HP, each filter handled two cylinders,  but yet guys on this site complain about air restriction on a twin cylinder motor that works hard to make 60 HP per cylinder. Just sayin, We all have opinions.
