Ordered Progressive 944's
« on: September 22, 2016, 04:53:54 PM »

I'll have my new shocks on Sat for my 15 CVO SG.

They tell you to mount them inverted for clearance.

I did speak to Progressive directly and they claim there is no difference in the suspension if you mount it upside down.  He also said to try it the normal way and see if you clear the bags as some will.

Lastly, since I don't have the service manual, does anyone know the torque specs for the shock bolts?

Good choice!  I think I had 444's on Ol' Maudie, but I've got 944's on Maybelle.  I like 'em!  Don't know the specs on torque.  I clamped 'em down with a 3/4" drive. Hard.  No worries.  Enjoy!  Later--HUBBARD

So 944's are mounted.  Interesting thing.  I did mount them inverted with no clearance issues.  Don't know if I mounted them right side up if it would clear but I followed the directions.  I measured the sag two ways.  First while sitting on the bike and bouncing up and down a couple times, I had a friend measure the shock length from center eyelet to center eyelet and got 11 3/8ths on both sides.  That's smack in between 11.25 and 11.50 as I was told to look for.

Then we measured from a point on the bike to the rear axle center with me off the bike and then with me on.  The shock compressed between 1/2 and 3/4".  All these measurements and results came from the shocks as they were shipped.  (No adjustments made)  I'm told that they arrive in the softest setting.

I have a 150-175 miles ride to the Hamptons tomorrow morning so that should be a good solid test.

If anyone feels I did anything incorrectly or in the wrong sequence, please let me know.

Thanks all,

Demetri    :cherry:

Just returned from our ride to the Hamptons.  Got to put about 150 miles on her today and I must say, I was so impressed by the difference the 944 shocks made.  Did not bottom out once.  Ride height seemed as stock.  Did what they advertised it to do.  So glad I chose these over the entry level choices.  Great job Progressive!

I think for the money they can't be beat. Lots of folks recommend the Ohlins and they may be wonderful, But they cost to much for me to even consider them and the guy @ Daytona in the booth during Bikeweek could not properly promote his product. Not sayin he was under informed but he knew less about them than I did.

Lastly, since I don't have the service manual, does anyone know the torque specs for the shock bolts?

There is a You tube on installation and he said the torque was 35 to 40 lbs, he set them with lock tite at 37 lbs.

I guess you got the 13 inch vs the 12 inch shocks?

I saw that video and torque them to 45 ft pounds with a touch of blue loctite.  They come in 11" or 12".  I went with the 12" and my ride height is unaltered.  Best mod I've made to the bike.

I checked my settings on my shocks.  They were actually set to about 4 clicks from firmest setting.  My bad on that, this was the first time I took bags off.  At 158, I reset them to the lowest setting and I'll have to go for a ride or two before considering changing them out.  They may feel good after a year at a much too high setting.  I decided to check the torque on the attaching bolts. I got about a quarter to half a turn torquing to 37 lbs on all 4 bolts.  They may have been a little below on torque.
