96" motor issues?
« on: October 14, 2016, 11:47:00 AM »

I have been reading the forum about the issues with the 110" motors and I have not read much about 96" motor troubles. I have read about the top end clatter and both mine have it to a minor degree.

Are there lifter or other known motor problems with the 96" motors? I have one with about 20,000 miles and another with about 11,000 miles and I have only replaced a throttle position sensor on the one with 20,000 miles.  The bikes have stock motors and exhausts and I use Redline synthetic oils in all three holes.

I have read about the lifter, compensator and bearing problems and I would not like to lose a motor if I can do some preventative maintenance of replacement parts before they historically fail.

All twin cams are prone to tensioners goin out, lifters getting blowby, and the top end sounding like a handful of marbles are dancing around. At 20,000 i would check the camchest and lifters they might need replacing right now or are still good for many more miles. The 96" bone stock is pretty reliable especially if all you do is cruise it and put good oil in it.
