Help,,,, Piston Noise on 13' CVO Ultra
« on: October 15, 2016, 05:21:57 PM »

I'm new to this site and I have a 2013 CVO Ultra that I just purchased.  When it heats up, I get a Piston Noise. My bike has Vance & Hines Tru Duels and 4" Rinehart slip ons with a Screaming Eagle Super Tuner Pro which was installed by the Harley dealer when new. I bought it with 14,900 miles on it. Luckily it still has a full warranty. My local shop (not Harley dealer) said it sounds like a "Loose Piston" from it Not being properly tuned after the pipes and tuner were installed when new.  I trailered it to a Harley dealer and still waiting for an answer.  Any thoughts are appreciated.

That statement about a loose piston really makes no sense unless that local shop is claiming the bike was running so rich the excess fuel was washing down the cylinder walls and caused excessive wear.  That's not very likely.

What exactly are you calling "piston noise"?  Piston slap is usually more noticeable when the engine is cold, not hot, because the piston expands as it heats up.  It will have the most clearance when it's cold.  Does your noise occur at all engine rpms and riding conditions, or do you only hear it under certain conditions like acceleration, deceleration, light throttle, heavy throttle, whatever?  Are you actually talking about detonation (some call it pinging) that occurs under acceleration?  THAT can be caused by a bad tune and would be worse when hot.

Give us some better detail and perhaps someone here can point you in the right direction.

The Noise is at all Rpm's but obviously more pronounced at higher Rpm's. sounds like the front head. it could be detonation because it is worse when hot.

And what you describe sounds like some sort of valve lash. Could be a lifter bad. Common

It's funny you say that, I went to my local dealer in July stating I had lifter noise; the tech returns the bike and stated duplicated customers concern pinging due to ambient temps in Las Vegas. I bring the bike home dump the oil the oil plug is a chia pet with metal took 3 swipes to find the magnet, call the service manager tell him my findings, he states, no mechanical issues were found. Alrighty then, a few weeks later a lifter imploded in the bottom of the engine case $6300. plus to repair.

The Dealer in Vegas said it was a very bad Tune from the beginning. The Map was all over the place. He found No metal shavings or any other problems. they are gonna do a 15K service and  Dyno it on Wednesday and tune it right. Luckily its under warranty.

The Harley Dealer in Bend OR, Where the Original owner bought the bike. He had it done before he took delivery when new. That's where I got it while on vacation.

Forgive me; Let me backtrack a bit. Does the bike have a tuner if so what type, because I have never heard of any qualified tuner putting a tuner on a bike and then putting that same bike on the dyno before the bike motor was broken in; but that just my opinion. My other opinion is if there is a tuner on the bike it was never put on the dyno because the motor wasn't broken in, thus, the numbers being a very bad tune.

Where in Las Vegas did you bring it?

Before the original owner took delivery in 2013, the HD Dealership in Bend installed "Vance & Hines Tru Duals with 4" Rinehart Slip ons" as well as a "Screaming Eagle Super Tuner Pro". I bought it a few weeks ago in Oregon and towed it home. Now Red Rock Harley in Vegas has it now and are gonna Dyno it and Tune it "right". I Have all receipts and service records form day 1 showing everything that was done to it. All work up until now was done at Wildhorse in Bend Or.

P.S:  I just heard from Red Rock Harley and they said the Dyno went great and the knocking sound is gone. Once they fix the ABS module i should get it back next week.

I thought it was common for dyno tuners to seat rings or some sort of process of breaking in while tuning. :nixweiss: I'm sure Jerry could tell us.

That's true of  really good professional tuners, but probably not your typical Harley dealership.  In this case it is most likely just one more of those "tunes" people get that consist of a "tech" loading one of Harley's canned maps and pretending to do a full tune.  Those are much more common than a real tune.

I still have a question for the OP.  You keep mentioning you still have a full warranty on that used 2013 model that will take care of this.  Who exactly is this warranty from, the dealer you bought the bike from?  Did they say they would cover fixing the bad tune?  Or are you talking about an ESP and just assuming they will pay to fix a tune?  Tunes are not a covered item in ESP's.

I have to pay for the Dyno but the Original owner bought the 7 yr unlimited mileage Warranty as well as the Maintenance which is transferred to me.  I was referring to if they had to pull the motor apart then it would have been covered.

Harley Dealers in Las Vegas don't and won't dyno a Harley before it is broken in; that has been my experience, that is where I was going with my line of questions.
