10k Service complete
Rear Cylinder Replaced - casting flaw. No rings were replaced due to low mileage failure of cylinder I guess thats normal..
Shift Shaft Seal - leaking oil
ECM - Bike wouldn't run after cylinder replacement
Clutch recall - second round
Saddle bag clips recall
Declined to spend $300 on R/F speaker that doesn't work anymore

I'm told you're ready to ride put gas in it and enjoy, everything else checked over during service.

I have to say it's a damn good thing I purchased ESP 2+5 otherwise this 10k bike would have just cost me about $2k to get out of the shop.

No, that's not normal.  Or let's say it isn't the right way to do things, but it might be the normal way these people screw customers over.

I certainly hope you have no plans to use this dealership for anything in the future.

Ummmm... new cylinder you could use the old piston -- I did say could, I wouldn't but that's just me, nothing really wrong with using the old heat soaked piston as long as it's not egg shaped, badly scored or something - but using the old rings????  :vrolijk27:

I'd also be wondering why a perfectly good ECM died a premature death at their hands..... seems strange to me that's all..

In any case if it were my bike I would begin my search for a different dealer to service it the way I think it should be done.

What dealership wouldn't want the money to do the rings plus?
The Motor Company would have been lucky to get out of the Las Vegas dealerships with a bill of $2500. on the motor / cylinder issue alone with their want to do more at all times; no matter who's money it is.

I don't understand why they didn't put rings in it..  The only thing they said when I questioned it was it wasn't needed with that low of mileage.  In my mind the rings were worn to fit the cylinder that was on the bike and now they have to wear to seat in the new cylinder. At this point what can I do besides hope I don't have lower compression, more blow by or worse oil consumption due to oil ring not seating well.  Then I have to listen to the same old story about burning 800 miles a quart is within specs for a Harley.

I have checked the oil now and will see how it does on the trip.. Hopefully when I get back I can post what a great trouble free ride it was..

What dealer?  If I'm plus incidentals traveling I want to make sure I steer clear of them.
Rings are a given plus incidentals when the jugs are replaced when the jugs are porous, what is the difference if the casting is bad; I say the cylinder isn't true, thus, requires new rings plus. To eliminate potential issues down the  immediate line, another way of saying do the job right. I don't have a problem with this philosophy called a one time fix with no worries.

Got a follow up call today to see how things were going..  I questioned the rings again and was told ESP would not pay for the rings and he figured I didn't want to spend the money on something that wasn't needed.  My response was it would have been nice to of had the option instead of making the decision for me on how I spend my money.

Question for the group:  ESP wouldn't pay for rings on a cylinder replacement being a wear and tear item? Sounds like BS to me.

Pretty sure that's right - ESP won't pay for piston rings.  Over ten years ago dealer had to tear into my '99 Ultra.  Can't recall all the details but I do remember the service writer calling me saying they were ready to put the motor back together and did I want to spring for new rings as ESP would not.  I did.  Damn shame your dealer didn't give you the choice.

But with that being said when I was beta testing the 110 motor on my '07 cuse2 they had changed the cylinders out so many times I lost count.  Don't think they changed the rings and when the 'fix' was finally done the motor lasted over 60k and never used any oil.  Sure hope you have good luck with your repairs.   :2vrolijk_21:

They should have added rings to the job by stating noticed ring damage consistent with the casting flaw in cylinder when they received approval for the cylinder, that is how the ESP game is played. This way the dealership gets $40. for the rings if they had them in stock (which might be an issue) plus the labor plus incidentals. It is a shame the dealership you are dealing with doesn't know how to play the game. And of course ESP isn't going to allow the dealership to reopen the motor to do rings now after the fact. That is the reason for my original comment regarding doesn't the dealership want to make money ( by what I consider doing the right thing ).

With regard to rings being a wear and tear item; that is the motor; the main reason for anyone purchasing the ESP; Lifters wear covered, cams wear covered, fly wheels wear covered and all the bearings that wear and fail covered under ESP. Did you call ESP to verify that rings are considered a wear item and not covered by the ESP?  I believe their number is 1-800-527-7665 and have your contract number handy.

:drummer: I hear a 117 in the back round

X-2 + They are paying for the labor to pull it down...Put somw bwwf back in place. Hoping I have an issue like that. My '16 is puking oil out the breather. first thing Tom my HD tech is doing is running a leak down & compression. be a damn shame if warranty would have to pull i down to the cases to fix it...Have the 117 kit with some Mahle 10.8 pistons
 on stand by..lol

Consider this like using used gaskets to assemble a motor.
