Softail B Motor Questions
« on: October 21, 2016, 10:23:11 AM »

I'm looking at a few motors on eBay.

I need a B motor that has the old style 4-bolt primary bolt pattern.  This would limit me to '06 and earlier or possibly "some" '07 bikes.

The motors I've found vary in mileage from 19k up to 61k.

I'm looking at an '02 with 61k miles.  They "say" it runs great and no smoke.  So if I assume it's in good condition and I want to do some updates (refresh) to it, am I looking just at the jugs/pistons on up?  Or are these prone to lower end issues?

I see that I can get an S&S big bore kit for around $700, or I could bore my stock cylinders and get pistons from one of the motor guys here on the forum.

I would do lifters, but not sure if the heads would need to be redone at this mileage.

I've found a few in the 35k to 45k range and my guess would be on those that I could just bolt in and run with them, if they're in good running order etc.

Any suggestions on what to do to get an 88" or 96" 4-bolt primary bolt pattern for a good price?

Thanks in advance for the great advice I'm sure to get.

Have a great weekend all...

well the earlier engines up to 2004 " I think " had heavier counter balancers and seemed to be more prone to shifting the pressed on sprocket for the chain. Ends in a vibration.. but the B engine has more parts but other than that they run very well . If you have your stocker why not swap the crank for a 4 3/8 stroke add a 107 kit and go from there great way to increase the tq. I mean 107 stock heads will make right at 100 hp and tq in the 115-120 range with a  mild bolt in cam

Thanks for the reply.

My preference would an '06, but finding one with the black that I want, lower mileage and a price I want to pay, may be a bit of a challenge.

For my purpose of a reverse trike, a stock 96" would have all the oomph I need, but I may have to settle for an 88".  If that's the case and it does have low miles, I may down the road get a big bore kit to bring it up to around the 95" / 96" range.  Boring out stock cylinders and new pistons are also an option.

I have a new Ultima R2 carb which is a clone of the S&S Super E carb.  I have the manifold, carb and I've made an adapter to use my '08 SE AC that I have leftover from my '08 SERK.  The carb is good for up to around 100" motors.  They take all of the same jets as used in the S&S Super E.

I plan to use a Thunder Heart standalone ignition system to keep the wiring to a minimum.

I guess if I could find a '05 or '06 with less than 35k miles, I would use it as it is.  I would check out the lifters/cam, but that would be about it.  I've not heard of any lifter issues in those years and the valve springs are a LOT weaker than our newer 110" motors, so should be okay.

Thanks for all the looks from you guys.

If you are looking to do a "build", the trike, why don't you look for a dealer "take out" 103? I just bought one up here for $3000. Canadian pesos, had 8 kms..
 96" are a dime a dozen.
