Funny (not really) finding this thread here. I did a search on heated grips earlier today trying to find some good news or an easy fix for them as mine went out last week. I cam across this thread in the EG section that speaks about some other way of heating them that seems to work but I cannot get any other info on them. Heres the link to that thead:

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php/topic,3536.0.html

I've had a Goldwing and never had a problem with the heated grips. A friend of mine had one as well and never had a problem with his wings heated grips. Never heard as far as the beamers go.

On my Smurf I never had to go over 3 to get good comfortable heat. I get used to having it on these cold mornings then POOF........ its gone. MOCO needs to get off their bootys and find a cure!  >:(

To look at the other side, does anyone have a set of HD heated grips that works great? I mean, someone who uses them all the time and loves them. I too think mine were hotter when the bike was brand new, and now with a whopping 600 miles on the clock, think they've cooled off a good bit.

All I've heard is bad, but has anyone had good luck with them?

Chief

I should just keep my mouth shut here (but ya'll know me better than that by now).

Contrary to what I have read here about turning them off after every ride, I leave mine at the 6 setting all the time. I've had the ride since 12/1/06 and now have 3400 miles. Occasionally I'll turn them down to 3. I can't really tell if they are as hot now as when I picked it up. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed! ;D

Yea, I've blown 2 fuses so far.   Mine started out hot at 3 and now barely warm.

I'm probably gonna replace the stock bars with wild ones soon so if there is a better solution - even non-MOCO I'd like to hear about it.

Cheers,

Mark

Well, I sure hope I don't jinx myself here, but my bike's approaching it's first B-D next week, and so far, with crossed fingers, mine have worked OK. There are times when I think that they aren't really getting that hot, but it's cold and I have thick gloves on, and when I check them with bare hands, they still feel hot.  Compared to Goldwing though, they don't even compare as to the amount of heat generated. I also have to say that I've been very pleased with the seat also, as I usually have to put it on low as high is too hot.  The temps during this very scientific study would be the upper 30's to around 50.   ;D

In the same testing temapture range, I leave the seat on high all the time and had never been uncomfortable. I think I have a little more "cushion" than most though.

Hey Chief,

My '06 SEUC had probelms with the heated grips, the factory never hooked them up!!!!!  Worked fine after dealer connected the harness.

My '07 SEUC heated grips work great...use them all the time in cold weather.  Hope they last!!!!

Does anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram for the heated grips? Its not in the Electrical Manual as it is not considered a stock item.

Do you have the SE supplement? If not, I can check mine tonight and post a scan.

Chief,

I guess not. I bought the 2007 service and electrical manuals. Is the supplement something I can purchase from my dealer?

Chief...hope somebody pipes up here and says they have worked great for the past year, but I kinda' doubt it.  If I added up actual hours of use on my grips before failure, I would say it would be at most 80-100 hours of on-time.  That's really not much, when I've put 10K on the bike since June.

Unfortunately, it's just a matter of when they're going to fail, not if.  I don't understand why they can't make a set that works.  I've had mine off the bike, unwired, laying on the table. The things have silicone sealer all on the inside of the ends. It's just not that complicated and I don't think the problem is with the wiring inside the bars, but most likely with the rheostat or whatever they have stuck in the end of the left one.

Well, I must confess. I have had the bike a year now, with 11K miles and have not had ant trouble with my heated grips. They have worked great and I never have to utrn them above 3. I hope they continue, cause I got rid of my heated gloves when I got the bike. {keeping my warm fingers crossed}.

Mine seem to work just fine. I've turned them on at about 6 and haven't turned them off since about November. Sometimes I notice them a bit warm and other times, might be due to the gloves etc... Anyway, all good.

Alright, during the afternoon ride, I had to turn the handlebars down to 3 and the seat to low.

Yeah, it got hot.

Yeah  the seat does get too hot on high  except when its 15 out  but then the grips and gloves hardly do much :-[.
