2009 Street Glide cruise control issues
« on: November 06, 2016, 12:21:58 PM »

I took my 2009 Street Glide out for a final ride for the year and the cruise control started acting up. The dash switch works and the cruise will work and kick out after a mile or two. The green light in the tach works when the cruise is holding, but the cruise seems to kick out after a mile or two and may not respond to the button for several miles and then it might activate if you push the switch.

It appears to me to be the cruise switch as everything else works normal. I looked on Ronnie's HD website and the fiche shows that the switch can be purchased separate.

Anyone else ever run into this type of issue with your factory cruise control?

Unlike prior years with the large Delphi cruise module on the side of the battery tray and the stepper cable between it and the throttle body your bike doesn't have a lot of extra cruise specific parts to fail and keep the system from working.  On yours and later it's all in the ECM and electronic throttle management.  So, hopefully, you've got a dirty or failing switch.

It is worthwhile on those switches to open up the switch housing and hit it with it well with electrical contact cleaner.  That's part of my regular spring service "just because."  Worst case it's a zero cost and easy attempt that won't hurt anything.

have you done anything up in the handlebar area lately?  a lot of times problems with the cruise control can be traced back to the brake light switch in the brake lever perch.

No, I have not done anything to the bike. I hauled it out to Rapid city, SD 3 weeks ago and we rode about 330 miles in two days w/o an issue. I washed the bugs off of it after returning home and never got the switches wet. I have not touched the bike at all in the last 3 weeks until yesterday's short ride.

I never considered the front brake light switch as being potentially part of the problem.

It acts like the cruise switch isn't making contact because the green light in the tach never comes on either and then everything will appear to work when I try to engage the cruise and it may work fine for a mile or two before disengaging again.

I am going to pull it apart tomorrow and clean things out in the handle bar switch and see if that helps.

I appreciate the help.
