nikasil blues
« on: December 27, 2016, 09:34:13 AM »

yeaah right,, dropped a skirt on front cylinder, so now i got that nikasil mush all around the engine,
thinkin this is the time to go S&S 124 ,,  need new crank, cylinders, pistons, bearings and the full treatment,,
any suggestions here ,,  thinking about a lefty Timken too, and have the heads done ,,i have a 2012 road glide cvo,,
so will those S&S kits work ?  is my crank the same as the 96 -103 ,do i have a lefty timken ?.
anyone with a kit that will work?  i like to build a bulletproof engine this time
thanks, and a happy new riding year

'Don't know what the regulations are where you are at?? If available, I suggest one of the S&S 124 Crate Engines. or the S&S Components if the Crate Engines are not available to you. If going Timken, be sure to have the Cases Line Honed.

Just out of curiosity, what brand / what size nicasil Cylinders were you running?? How many miles at fail??

3000 miles? I assume you mean a piston broke? Is that what you are saying? Why did the piston fail? With todays materials and quality manuf pistons normally only fail as a result of something else going wrong, like lean out, overheat etc. What happened to yours? Or did something else fail and a piston break as a result? 3000 miles, if that is what you meant to say, is a very short amount of time. Just curious.

common issue with that brand. some do better than others but in the end it fails.

No personal experience with these coated parts.  Can't help but be curious though, is there a short end and a long end to the expected service life?

Nikasil has been used successfully by many companies, while others have had major difficulties including automotive recalls and engine replacements.  It is far from foolproof even for the huge corporations, so I would not consider buying parts with Nikasil coatings from anything less than one of those huge corporations and only then after they provide a long term warranty that will cover all costs associated with a failure.

It's obviously too late in this case, so the next approach is to contact Revolution Performance and see if they will stand up.  Good luck.

Since I'm running the RP Nicasil Kit, also curious as to what actually happened???

that is a failure of cylinder , coating wise you infected some much aluminum into the mix. I would be shocked if it did not peel the coating off the cylinder wall. In the end its still a failure but I can say I have not seen that before. Also I would measure the case to see if the S&S cylinder will drop right on. I recall the older specs being a different size that what S&S calls for .  Not that it matters as you have to take the case apart anyways.

New S&S crank pump plate, piston oilers .. Make sure you pull the pan and toss it in the trash you will never get it clean. The baffle will hold junk under it. Also when the pan is off look up at the bottom of the trans many times that powder coat will trap junk as well . Oil cooler will be junk as well. oil lines to cooler more trash items.

Rocker arm bushings need to be closely inspected .. All in all you have a mess on your hands and it will take some work to remove all of it . If you do not the next engine will suffer damage

As Steve mentioned, oil cooler / lines,,, I'd replace all the bearings, lifters... What are your plans for the Heads?

Are the 124 Crate Engines available in Oslo?? At this point, it might be a cost effective alternative...  :nixweiss:
