09 cam tensioner shoes
« on: January 02, 2017, 04:57:12 PM »

Just pulled the SE 260 cams and getting ready to slip a set of 24D cams in to prep from a 117 drop in kit. Need to replace the cam tensioners while in there, HD # 39968-06 and HD #39969-06. Is there an aftermarket replacement shoe that will drop in to the HD tensioners? I done a search and really only came up with complete replacements, Zippers, S&S. Any knowledge about the Cyco replacement shoes or any others?

Thanks
David

Those were installed when the 260's were installed and that was about 50,000 ago. Guess putting it that way it might make sense to just go back with the whole HD assemblys

Yes there are replacement shoes on eBay. Just search for Harley Cam Tensioners. I'm running them no issues.

Thanks Brad. After I looked at the mileage on the HD tensioners vs the price I run by the dealer this morning and picked up a new set. If they run as many miles as the first set did it will still be cheap mileage

Yes sir! I think I have the correct removal tool, Jims 993 and the correct install tool, Jims 787. The only question I have is I ordered bearings from Motion and received a Koyo B168 instead of the Torrington. From what I can read they are the same bearing manufacturer now. Are the Koyo ok to use?

You're ok on the bearings.  Just an FYI for any future needs it's a good idea to at least consider George's Tools for those of needing things for our own use.  He's a great guy to work with.  His warranty is without regard to how ham-fisted we might have gotten.  The tools themselves are actually quite good and, fortunately, he doesn't have the record of threaded rotary rectal insertion to some of the site members here that Jim's does.

Thank you Don. The last tool I bought was from Georges and is very nice piece and will buy others from him as needed. The cam bearing tools came from Fleabay several years ago as a bargain and been laying on a shelf ever since. Knew I would get tired of being raped by the dealers sooner or later. Later is here.

Are the oil pump alignment tools worth using or am I better off rolling the bike through and letting it self center?

Even if I'm using the alignment screws I still roll it through.  Don't know whether it's just old habits that won't die or an abundance of caution.  I'm more comfortable letting the engine tell me when it's happy through rotation than merely trying to tell it to be happy through some alignment screws.

Thanks Don. That is kind of what I thought. First trip in to the cam chest and trying to get educated the cheap way rather than throwing it together and getting the education later.

Amen to that Brother.  Secondary expenses and secondary explosions have more in common than just the first word in their name!  :drink:
