The only foolproof way I know of to avoid these issues is to never let the dealership touch your bike after the sale.  For many of us that wouldn't be a problem, because we wrench on our own stuff whenever possible, but considering the ever worsening quality levels over the past dozen years it gets harder and harder to avoid the dealership due to warranty work.  There have been times over the years with my Harley's as well as my cars when I just took care of relatively inexpensive warranty repairs myself and ate the cost.  Now that the severity and cost of many repairs has escalated, that isn't a viable answer for most people.

Don't forget folks, while you may have to let a dealership do factory warranty work, you do not have to use a dealership for ESP work.  Find a good independent shop if your local dealer is less than stellar.

If only, if only that were possible.  Although I've never had a damage problem other than the one previously reported which the dealership handled responsibly and to my full satisfaction I still cringe whenever I have to go to any dealer for service.  Hopefully my new '17 will be more bulletproof than the other Harleys I have owned.  Hope springs eternal as they say.

My motorcycle has been in numerous times never had an issue with damage, however I can see this happening during the diagnosing process.
There is a fair amount of construction going on in Las Vegas and the tech has to go on the highway to mimic the customers complaint and a road stone hits the front fender / fairing / lowers or saddlebag; puts a nice ding in it. Was the the tech being malicious and or negligent or simply doing his job? Bottom line, the bike is damaged.

I brought my 2011 Ford F 150 into the Dealer to change the Transmission fluid at 50,000 miles, no dip stick to see the level or color; Ford stated fluid good for 100,000 miles therefore I had it changed at 50K. When the truck wash person was returning the truck he nailed one of the bright yellow pillars supporting the building when making the turn, crushing the bumper and fender. Could I foresee that happening, just goes to show you, anything can happen.

My dealer had to take mine out after adding the mufflers and tuner. they also mentioned that they do a safety ride to ensure the set-up has been completed to the specifications. I live up here in the Northeast and the roads are salt and mud. It was delivered slightly filthy!  >:(

Does this dealership have a dyno?  If so, they could do their "road test" on that, and not risk trashing your bike on sloppy and salty roads.

A simple road test is a good idea any time someone works on your bike or car.  It's part of the quality assurance program in the good places, and helps cut down on those highly pizzed customers who drive or ride off and have to turn around and go back because something wasn't done right.  Unfortunately you have to rely on the management of the shop to ensure the person doing the test isn't abusing the vehicle and/or leaving it in worse condition than when you dropped it off.  Talk to the service manager or dealer.  If they are a good shop, they will pick the bike up, wash it, and return it in good condition.  If they blow you off, then find another place to work on your bike in the future.  All too often people let this stuff slide when they shouldn't, and then wonder why the same place does the same stuff to them again and again.  There's an old saying that goes something like this: "Screw me once, shame on you.  Screw me twice, shame on me."

In my immediate area I have 3 Dealerships; that being said, any customer who has service and or warranty work that costs $100. or more the motorcycle is washed and detailed after it is safety checked and road tested.
