Twin Cam History Question
« on: January 14, 2017, 12:40:38 PM »

I understand that both "A" and "B" motors through '02 had a good crank and left side Timken bearing.  Then '03 and '04 continued the good crank, but dropped the Timken left side bearing.

I'm looking for a "B" motor to use coupled to a Miata 5spd or 6spd inline trans.  The "B" motor will be smoother and "should" be easier on the trans than an "A" motor.

I'll be using a cast housing adapter that fits the S&S Wedge, which is the pre-07 crankcase four bolt pattern inner primary.  It will be coupled through a compensator of sorts using rubber anti-torque pulse coupling to an adapter that has the Miata bell housing bolt pattern.

I can easily update the 88" up to a 95" to 97" with an S&S big bore kit or I understand that the original cylinders could be bored with new larger pistons.

So if I'm looking for the pre-'06 primary bolt pattern "B" motor with the strongest crank assembly, an '02 or earlier followed by up through '04 without the Timken, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks again...

Have a great weekend.

I see the mad scientist of the hot-rod world is at it again!  Is this for your Morgan project, or some other?
Oh and by the way, sorry I can't be of any help to you.  I couldn't understand a thing you said in your post!   :nixweiss:
I'm dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to knowledge at the level you're at, my friend!   :P

99-02 Hot Forged, Timkin
03-04 Cold Forged, Roller

Now THAT looks like it's going to be a fun project.

why not just get the lower end plugged & welded and install a Timken conversion if needed??

They're all 88" from '99 thru '06 with the four bolt primary pattern.  So I figured if I got a '02 or earlier, I'd have the good crank and Timken left side.

I'm not sure that I need the Timken, but if there's a bit of shock load on the coupler, I figured I would be better off with it.

So  big bore kit would be required regardless.  As long as I get a low mileage, I feel okay with going this way.  There have been some nice 30k mile or less, but I'm picky and just haven't cut loose yet with the purchase.  I have time, maybe 6 months before I need to have a motor, so just looking now and if the right deal pops up I may buy one.

Thanks for the input guys.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about.  Just can't seem to cut loose with the $50k to $60k to get one.

I figured I could build one better and cheaper with the options I want.

Thanks.

Does the left side case need to be machined to install a Timken on an '03 and newer?

Excuse my ignorance, Timken taper rollers are installed in pairs "back to back" and pre-loaded, so? are there two bearings on the left side mounted as such.

That's my understanding, but I'm not an expert on cranks, bearings and cases.

If I can get the Timken done after the fact and I can get a good deal on a later "B" motor, I may go the route and have the Timken installed later at the same time I do a big bore kit.  I'm just looking for the more reliable left side crank bearing for my out of the norm inline car transmission coupling.
