Cold knock
« on: April 25, 2017, 11:21:07 AM »

I have a 2016 CVO Street Glide all stock internally with just under 5000 miles, it has Vance and Hines Power duals header with OS 450 rounds and has been dyno tuned. I'm getting a crazy loud cold knock. It doesn't sound ticky like lifters, but litterally metal on metal knocking. Any ideas, after about 5 minutes when it's fully warmed up, it quites right down and sounds better then the other two twin cams I've owned. It also runs extremely well and shows plenty of oil pressure at idle and under load. It never runs hot and doesn't use oil. Any ideas? I'm bringing to the dealership tomorrow. I just had the 5k done 400 miles ago and it's done this since new. But seemed the worst it's ever been yesterday. If I park it for 20 minutes and restart it warm, it's not there only on cold starts.

Piston fit would cause cold piston slap

That's what it sounds like. It goes away when warmed up and runs great. Is this a common issue on 110's?

Piston slap isn't unusual on 110's, but it doesn't produce a hard knock.  You'll need to have a decent shop do some diagnostics and not just blow you off with the usual nonsense about it being "normal".

One item that has been problematic for Harley for the past five or six years is lifters that bleed down overnight and knock loudly until they slowly pump back up.  That one will create a hard and very loud knock that eventually disappears as the engine runs, until the next time the engine sits long enough to let the lifter bleed down again.  It would be the first thing I'd check, based on your description of the problem.

I watched some videos on line and I definitely think it's a lifter issue. The reason I didn't at 1st was how long it lasted and how it sounds. I thought lifters where clunky, but I've since heard bad lifters knocking like my bike. It runs great and is super quite after full warm up, maybe 5 minutes or so. It's after it sits for at least a few hours or more. its done it since new and some days it seems worse then others. When it's bad, it's real bad.

They replaced the lifters and its a lot better now. My only issue is the oil pressure. It was around 15 at idle warmed up today but only at 29 to 30 at speed. I feel like it was 35 to 36 before the work was done. Thoughts on this pressure? Idle pressure looks good but cruising pressure seems low.

29-30 seems a bit low on the big Twin Cam oil pump.

Was the ambient temperature significantly higher today?

You'd have to consult a 2016 shop manual for current specs, but in the past the spec was 30-38 psi at normal operating temp (230°F oil temp) and 2000 rpm.

I can't think of a reason for the idle pressure remaining the same as before but the cruise pressure dropping.  If the lifter replacement caused a drop in pressure, I'd expect the drop to show up more at idle, not cruise.  You might want to have the shop verify the oil pressure readings with a calibrated mechanics gauge instead of the bike's gauge. before you assume anything.

If it's the same oil pressure gauge before and after the job I'd rule out the oil gauge.

How did they perform this lifter job?  Do you know the details of what they did?

The oil pressure was back up over 30 last time I rode, but it's still lower 30's not 36 like it was. They pulled the cams to Check them because the knock was so loud. They checked out fine so they put new lifters in and that was all it needed. I'm probably just paranoid, but this bike has been problematic from day one. It's had a leaky front wheel (loose valve stem TPMS sensor), its blown 7 speakers and 1 amp, my slip on fell off because it was torqued down properly, the dash panel peeled off, the front fairing was defective on delivery (paint blemish), the steering head loosened up prematurely and made the front end vibrate on the highway, it had the clutch recall and now the reservoir cover is peeling, the boom audio has been problematic since day one and now the lifters all had to be replaced at 5000 miles. I love the look sound and power of the bike, but I'm a litle sour from the quality issues. If anything else goes wrong it's hitting the launching pad lol.

Reason why I asked is if they removed the oil pump from the camplate and didn't re-center/re-align it properly this could be the culprit.

Ride it, don't worry about the oil pressure being at 30 or so. It's getting plenty of oil.

Watched it today and it's 27 to 29 at 2500 rpm sometimes hits 30. This was after 1 hour of highway and hard riding. Idle is 13 to 15. Thoughts?

IMO 27-29 is below spec at 2500 rpm.

It's below minimum specification (assuming the gauge is accurate).  I'm guessing they messed something up when they removed and reinstalled the cam plate/oil pump, and you need to take it back and have them fix it.  I'm still scratching my head about the idle pressure being the same as before but only the cruise pressure is lower.  If they figure it out and manage to fix it, let us know exactly what they did.
