A real HOT bike, but not in a good way.
« on: May 01, 2017, 08:35:44 AM »

I have a '16 RGU CVO - and 110 motor is burning up my right calf.

After researching and reading a lot posts over several forums, I notice people saying (although the motors are hot anyway) that extra heat is due to running real lean.

I also have a lot of popping on decel, which I've also read is due to running real lean....

So instead of toasty leg, I'm getting a deep-fryer crispy kind of feeling on the right side. I need all the help I can get.

Question is; Is that something that is a quick fix from the dealer? - I just bought the bike a month ago (600 miles) - Or do I have to pay extra (which I prefer not to spend $$ on if I don't have to) to get a tune on there?

Thanks in advance for anyone's input....

PS. I'd rather not start removing stuff so as to keep my warranty intact.

I'd recommend ditch the catalytic converter (Located by your right calf!) and re-flash it with an aftermarket tuner (Like the Vance and Hines Fuelpak FP3)
From what I am hearing, Harley got into trouble for their dealers altering emissions  on the bikes so you will likely have a hard time getting any of them to flash it richer...   At least not enough that you will notice any difference.

You can always re-flash it back to the original calibrations (The Vance and Hines keeps a copy of your original map that you can always restore) and reinstall the catalytic converter if you have need for a major warranty issue.

Do these 2 things and the bike will run MUCH better and run cooler!

You can replace your head pipe with one made from Fullsac or FuelMoto which has no cat, but will allow stock mufflers if you like them, or aftermarket--whichever way you want. As far as a tuner goes, the best way would be to have the bike dyno tuned by a reputable shop....choice of tuner would depend on what that shop works with and recommends. There are 2 types--something like a Power Commander which piggybacks your factory ECM (no changes are made to the ECM), or something like a TTS Mastertune or PowerVision which will re-program your ECM and leave no additional hardware on the bike. It's best to use what the person doing the tuning suggests, since once it's done you leave it alone unless you make further changes to the motor, intake or exhaust. You just need to ask around and find someone with a good reputation for doing the work correctly.

In my 2015 CVO Street Glide and 2016 CVO Limited I installed V&H Power Duals and mufflers (4.5 and 6.5) with SERT and dedicated tuning. I NEVER had any issue in terms of excessive heat.
As written before Cat and lean gas/air ratio can generate some heat.

On my 2015 CVO RGU I had the same problem from stock. I finally changed to a fullsac DX head pipe and put 2.0 fullsac baffle sin the stock mufflers. Tuned with a sert and the problem was reduced considerably.  The motor always ran much hotter than my 103 CVO ultra even after 107 upgrades and head work.  It is I believe some nature of the beast but pipes and tune will help significantly!

On my 15 SERGU I reduced the heat by adding a Fullsac DX head pipe which fits under the factory heat shields, installing fullsac power cores in the factory mufflers and then a TTS tuner with a map set up for the changes.

To save a few $$, you can get the Fullsac DX head pipe, use your OEM heat shields, get a set of Fullsac baffles (your choice of the three) and a TTS tuner all from Steve at Fullsac.  You call Steve and tell him it's a factory stock motor and he'll send the TTS with a canned map so that you don't have to spend the money on getting it dyno tuned.

A number of people on this forum have done exactly that and been very happy with it.  If you ever have to take it in for warranty work, replace your head pipe and put it back to stock tune and you're good to go for warranty work.

I also put on the Fullsac DX header with the TTS turner.  Steve is very good to work with.  She does run a little cooler but to be fair don't expect a major improvement but it is a noticeable improvement. You will also find a big difference in performance. Overall you will be happy with the product and improvements.

I know I am going to catch a lot of flack over this but...
You can save yourself $4 - 500.00 bucks just buying an OEM Takeoff  headpipe from ebay with the cat removed.   I have done this mod on 3 bikes now (12 RG 103, 14 RK CVO 110 & 16 SG CVO 110) AND NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES.   Runs Great,  Sounds Great, and inexpensive.   You can tell everyone you have a Fullsac or a "Full Sack" or whatever you want!   The headpipes are the same for many years and CVO's, Non CVO's, 103's and 110's are all the same...  I do recommend a re-flash after the cat is removed though because the bike will run leaner if you don't!

Most vendors offer free shipping and no cores so you have your stock one if you need to stick it back on!    Here's an example:   http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-Harley-Touring-cat-free-head-pipe-w-free-gaskets-/282428613074?hash=item41c20ea1d2:g:D20AAOSw4CFY6968&vxp=mtr

People are going to say this is bad because (Fill in the blank) but I have never had ANY ISSUES.  The Harley exhaust system is very basic if you analyze it.   Vendors will tell you that you could get 02 sensor "Cross Talk" bla bla bla... or That they fine tune their systems for optimal back pressure bla bla bla...  Because they want you to buy their systems.

I will be the first to admit that if your goal is to extract every single bit of horsepower and torque out of your engine that is possible, then go another route, but it will cost you BIG MONEY.    If you just want it to RUN BETTER, GET BETTER MILEAGE, SOUND BETTER, and RUN COOLER and SAVE SOME MONEY, then you can't go wrong just by gutting the Cat.   If you don't believe it, then try it.

Go ahead,  let the bashing begin!

All the talk about warranty concerns and putting it back to stock, but with a 16? Has anyone had warranty issues with them? We know the current situation with the M8s...
