New Escort Radar detector *HOT*
« on: February 22, 2007, 07:38:33 PM »

Check out this new radar detector from Escort...I'm a gadget man and have to have it!!!!!  It has a GPS in it as well as the ear jack.  I've had Escort products ever since they were Cincinnati Microwave and IMHO it's the best out there.  This sets a new benchmark.  I talked to the Tech at Escort about the MOCO detector and while it's a good detector (Escort makes it) the 8500 X50 and the Battery operated Passport is better.

Check this out and tell me what you think...it's a little pricey, but so was my 07 SE Ultra.

I've never had a radar detector on a bike.  Actually never had a radar detector of my own come to think of it.  One question just came to mind though.  Those of you that mount these units on a handlebar or fairing someplace; the units are originally intended for use inside the cab of some type of cage or another.  So I'm assuming they are not weather tight.  What do you when you hit a sudden shower?

Twolanerider,

I have the HD Radar unit (with faring mount) and it is made by Escort. Waterproof and works great. You can hear it over the radio, road noise and your buddies straight pipes. Volume is adjustable and you can use a patch cord if you want to so it alerts you through your head set; however, I have found that you never need it.

Thanks Andy.  You're describing that HD branded unit intended for bike use (right?).  Guess it would make sense that it'd be good for weather.  What about the rest of the normally dash mounted units commonly seen stuck on a handlebar though?  I know less than beans about these things.  Are they all designed with some weather tolerance?  Or do you have to be careful for most of the rest of this type of gear?

I've seen covers that you can get that fit some of the Escort brand detectors that are for motorcycle use. If I remember correctly the site has been mentioned here before. It has something to do w/a guy that reviews/sells radar detectors. Can't remember the name right now, sorry.

Figured there was some simple solution that someone had figured out already.  Such things have been on handlebars too long for there not to have been.  I'm too hare brained to be required to think about such things though.  It'd need to be in place to begin with or I'd just screw it up.  When I see a rain storm coming I'm usually already in the rain gear.  So the only thing I'm thinking of then is hunkering down and driving on through it.  Having to stop to mess with the various bits of hardware hung on and around the bike would just screw with my rhythm.

Take the test, put any Valentine (regardless of age) beside any Escort product then go an area where you know they regularly run radar. I promise you will send your Escort back. Then check and see who started Cinn Microwave (Escort) and ran it when they were king,, hint. It is also the name of a womens Holiday in Feb (Valentine).
Really, Mr Valentine is a very intelligent person and his products are above comparison. Don't believe me check any Car & Driver test over the years.

I am a fan of the Valentine 1.  He used to work for Escort and started his own company.  It does all the Escort does plus gives you the direction of the radar.

So when they compare the valentine to the escort in recent times they have not rated the valentine worth a hoot.   I have read quite a few reports of late and non have said that the valentine was as good as the escort or the bell.

I am curious if you have done a side by side comparision yourselves?   I am not for or against any of them just trying to do my homework before putting one in the car.   I can not believe that all these companies could be bought to say what they said there are too many of them one would think.

Yes I am fully aware of who Mr. Valentine is and who he worked for before branching out on his own.

I just got my 9500i last week and so far it is great!  I've never had a radar detector installed on a bike before, but for cage use, I couldn't be happier with the 9500i.  Lots of unique features and rock solid so far on giving a heads up.

Check out this site for some good discussion on detectors:

Here is the official site for the 9500i:

I agree with Under my wheels, if you read the tests in the link at radartest you'll see.  Craig Petterson has been writing those articles you speak of since 1994 and thats his personal website.

The Valentine is a good radar detector to be sure, but it is dated and not keeping up with the competition.  This new Passport 9500i is proof.  Valentine needs to change it's whole look, even if it's guts are new...people want something different.

Under my Wheels, how well do you like the GPS function in the 9500i?  I think that the mark funtion would be awesome to shut down certain alerts i.e. the BP where I get coffee ever morning

My comparisons of the 2, Valentine and Escort were done about 4 years ago.  We have photo radar in these parts.  The Escort went off when I was on top of it while the Valentine gave me about 100-200 yard warning.  The direction of the threat is very useful, a feature not offered in the Escort.  Valentine also has an upgrade program that allows you to send in your unit and for a fee far less than the cost of a new unit, updates the circuitry and programing.  I wish Garmin did that.    I am unaware of recent side by side tests but if they exist would like to see them.  The downsid eto the Valentine unit I own involves the size.  It is larger than the Escort which is not a big deal in a car but would be a negative for a bike.
